Top 10 HUMAN heroes from Toho’s sci-fi’s (Showa)

Postby Gwangi » Thu Oct 07, 2010 1:52 pm

At the beginning of the year, I did Toho’s top 10 human villains. Coming towards the end, I thought I would do the top heroes during the Showa era. Heroes are harder because it is usually a monster that comes out as the true hero, but there have been several notable human good guys (and I am talking about ordinary human beings, not ones playing aliens or with any superpowers).

10. Ichiro – Godzilla’s Revenge (Tomonori Yazaki). Grade school student, latch-key kid. Foils the plans of two bumbling robbers long before Macaulay Culkin.

9. Nanbara – Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (Shin Kishida). Interpol Agent. One cool dude, even if he smokes too much!

8. Yoshimura - Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster (Akira Takarada). Bank Robber. Is on the bad side and with a temper at first, but helps thwart the evil plans of the Red Bamboo.

7. Susan Watson – King Kong Escapes (Linda Miller). Lieutenant, UN Submarine Explorer. With the help of the big ape, finishes off a megalomaniac.

6. Shindo – Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster (Yosuke Natsuki). Police Detective. Assigned to keep watch on the lovely princess Akiko Wakabayashi, a job many of us would probably like to have!

5. Katsuo Yamabe – Destroy All Monsters (Akira Kubo). Captain, SY-3. Akira Kubo at his most commanding.

4. Sen-chan 'Bulldog', Shin'ichi Chûjô, & Michi Hanamura – Mothra (Frankie Sakai, Hiroshi Koizumi, Kyôko Kagawa). Journalist, Professor and Photographer. Had to include all three as one, since they were virtually a team.

3. Tetsuo Teri – Monster Zero (Akira Kubo). Inventor. Goes to show you don’t need to be brawny in order to be hero. Just invent a simple device and you could possibly save the world!

2. Daisuke Serizawa – Godzilla, King of the Monsters (Akihiko Hirata). Marine Biologist. No need for explanation.

And

1. Glenn – Monster Zero (Nick Adams). Astronaut, World Space Authority. Just very fun to watch!

ALL of Toho's Showa Sci-fi???

wow....

10. Shigeru (Rodan) - He may not do much in terms of actually combating foes, but he's a hero nonetheless.

9. Susan Watson (King Kong Escapes) - AND she's easy on the eyes.

8. Glenn (Monster Zero) - why, because I said so you FILTHY STINKIN RATS!!!

7. Akemi (War of the Gargantuas) - I HAD to get Kumi Mizuno on here...and it was this or Daiyo from Sea Monster, I went with this and figure I'm cool with it.

6. Yoshimura (Sea Monster) - character development is not a strong suit of these films, but it REALLY is here.

5. Sakai, Murai, and Junko (Mothra vs. Godzilla) - actively pleading for the rescue of humanity by heading into hostile territory? standup peeps right there...

4. Ichiro (Godzilla's Revenge) - Little dude takes on TWO adult bank robbers on his own (well, according to him Minya-san was with him...), AND has an assist in beating a monster, PLUS he is my most-identified-with Godzilla character from my childhood.

3. Koji Kobayashi (GRA) - He's likable, AND his self-sacrifice led to what is quite possibly my favorite way to end a monster's rampage EVER.

2. Dr. Serizawa (Gojira) - Oxygen Destroyer AND self-sacrifice? This guy rules.

1. The entire Hero crew of Godzilla vs. Gigan - seriously, they rule.

unfortunately, there aren't a TON of memorable characters outside of the Godzilla films...

unless we're talking villains...

I am not vain enough to believe that you would do something like that for MY sake. It just goes to show how awesome they are, really.

I mean, it IS the greatest single work of fiction ever conceived by humankind. :D

I know. That is why this list was more difficult to put together, but because of that, it was a little more enjoyable than the villains list (which was fun to do as well, but they were quite numerous in Toho’s films).

For some, I think Serizawa would be their most obvious choice, but for me, I don't like my heroes so much dour but rather more up-beat and that is why Nick Adams as Glenn was my top choice.

Not gonna do a top ten, but off the top of my head, I like:

Serizawa, Ogata, Emiko, Yamane from the original Godzilla

Nick Adams and Akira Takarada in Monster Zero are probably my favorites. (actually, just about any Akira Takarada character)

Dr. Bowen from FCTW is the man.

Kenji Sahara's character in Rodan

Takarada, Richard Jeakel and Jospeh Cotton in Latitude Zero

Capt. Jinguji in Atragon.

Akira Kubo in Matango

The entire cast of Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

The entire cast of Godzilla vs. The Thing

The entire cast of Godzilla vs. Gigan

Yeah, I would have to agree that cartoonist Gengo, shouldn’t be singled out and that entire cast of good guys all deserve their equal due. You can say the same thing for “Ebriahâ€

The corn on the cob/banana eatin' hippy alone makes this cast epic  Then throw in the hot karate girlfriend chick (Yuriko Hishimi, who definitely wasn't shy about showing off her body...do a quick google images search to see what I mean...hehehe :D ) and you've got one kickass protagonist group. :th-up: Not to mention they have the some of the best quotes in G history:

"You're a hard b*tch"
"You cheeky pig!"
"Someone kick me, kick me hard. We're stupid!"
GIANTC0ND0R!!!!!!!!

I agree with pretty much all of your list, especially Takarada and Cotten for Latitude Zero and Jinguji in Atragon, but every time Richard Jaeckel opens his mouth in ANY movie/show I see him in, I want to punch him in the throat. He annoys me that badly. Otherwise, great list.
