From WB's perspective, the problem with Superman Returns was it was not nearly "macho" enough. That obviously won't be the case with a Zach Snyder Superman movie. However, I hope he will be kept from going too far in that direction by The Nolans and Goyer. I think this could be a happy marriage between seemingly divergent filmmaking styles.
My only problem is that I'm not sure Snyder can make Superman his in the same way Nolan made Batman his, Raimi, Spider-Man, Singer, X-Men, etc. I think that's very important.
This seems to come more from the Transformers business approach, which is to take extremely talented filmmaker (Nolan, Spielberg) and have him shepherd a talented visualist who is weak on story and character (Bay, Snyder). Superman is a way more important (and complicated) character than anything in Transformers so he deserves better. This is a genuine American icon we're talking about here. But I guess the influence of Donner was so great, no other director right now feels he can truly make the character his.
However, In Nolan We Trust, right?
