I remember Superman Returns was pretty colorful. Not saying I liked the movie, but it was at least pretty.

Edit*: What I mean is LP has done colorful movies before.

Well since John Williams has pretty much retired and probably wouldn't be interested to begin with I would go with either Michael Giacchino, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri or Danny Elfman.

At one time I would have picked James Newton Howard but he's been hanging around Hans Zimmer too much and has become a dull composer.


I would keep Hans Zimmer and his stable of composers as far away from this project as possible. Unfortunately the mindset of most movie makers these days is to to avoid good film music and go with the sonic wallpaper music created by Zimmer and passed down through his ranks of composers (Jablonsky, Badelt, Djawadi to name a few).

So while the film may be good ala The Dark Knight, I'm afraid the producers/directors will choose to go with what most films have these days and the music will suffer.


As for directors I have no idea. It doesn't have to be a big name, just someone who can handle the material correctly.

Since my previous post I've done some looking into composer ideas for the new film. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm hoping the movie's score will be in a style similar to Ifukube's (but certainly not aping Ifukube's work).

James Horner - I was thinking of the score for The Rocketeer, but most of us have probably heard his work is several other movies including ST2: The Wrath of Khan, Willow, Glory, and The Mask of Zorro. He's even scored some animated movies including An American Tail, and The Land Before Time. Horner has also scored a couple of James Cameron movies, Titanic and Avatar -- I've not seen either movie so I don't have much idea about their score's.

Neill Blomkamp would be my ideal choice for a director. District 9 was excellent and showed that he has a taste for thought-provoking sci-fi inspired by real-life horrors. It also showed that the guy knows how to handle FX-heavy action scenes with a big sense of scope.


Regarding the score, I hope it's memorable. I loved Peter Jackson's King Kong but James Newton Howard's score for the film was just generic. It works for what it's meant to do, but I can barely recollect any particular cues from memory. I hope the score for the new Godzilla makes itself stand out in a good way.

Ifukube's Godzilla theme has to be in the movie. Not every famous film icon has an identifying theme but Godzilla is definitely one of the ones that does. I don't want them to just use stock Ifukube tracks like Toho did for the Millennium series, but go the James Bond route and have the latest film's composer re-score the classic theme anew.

Ehh, I don't really want "different". And I don't suspect we'll be getting different either. I'm sure LP/WB will get Michael Giachinno to do a score that while unique is very reminiscent of Ifukube. And given he's a huge G-fan that shouldn't be a problem.
