I got a lot of new stuff recently: Bandai Nova candy toy (it came with Ultraman Mebius), mini Black King & Takkong, Bandai Mukadendar, Marmit Kyuraso Seijin, Bullmark Giradoras, Bandai Velokron.

So I'm back from Disney World. Had a fantastic time and was able to see WALL-E at a midnight showing last Thursday night. Fantastic, fantastic film. I can't recommend it highly enough. I wouldn't even be surprised if this gets a general best picture nomination next year.

And to top it all off there were a few new toys waiting for me when I got home from work today.

First up is the mail order Gigabrain Monster X figure with the movie accurate paint scheme. The figure is actually really cool and the paint job is a lot more realistic than the Bandai toy. I think the gold figure is a little cooler though.




Next are two more Marmit Iron Joe built-up kits. The first one is Hedora, which I actually didn't think I was going to like very much until I actually got it. As all the Iron Joe figures do, this one immediately jumps to the head of the pack as far as my favorite Hedoras go, easily besting the 6" Bandai toy. I think it may be just a hair too tall, but it makes up for that with a great sculpt and a wickedly accurate paint job. The top of the head is actually made of a soft vinyl which works very well with the clear red lenses the eyes are made of. Even the texturing of the vinyl works well, capturing the feel of the rubbery sponge material the suit was made out of. The figure doesn't have much articulation aside from the head, but they were able to make the head completely poseable without ruining the flow of the sculpt. And while the figure is scaled a little small compared to the rest of the Iron Joe kits it perfectly fits in with the Monster Heaven line, and looks great alongside the 1968 MH Godzilla.





The other Iron joe kit is Megalon. And again, Marmit hits another home run with this figure. The sculpt is dead on, and it really does look like the monster stepped right out of the movie and is standing on my computer desk as I type this. The texturing matches the look of the suit perfectly and the paint job on the back wings is meticulously done. The pose is incredibly dynamic as far as Megalons go, though I'm a little disappointed that the right arm only looks good in one pose. Like Hedora, the head is made of soft vinyl and gold eyes are set beneath clear plastic lenses which give the figure an incredible amount of character. The antennae were packed separately and needed to be attached with super glue. But they look fantastic. I'm glad Marmit offers these kits as built-up vinyl figures, because they do an amazing job with these, the crummy Gezore figure notwithstanding.

man... I really need to get those Marmit Iron Joe figs. Do you know how many of the figures version were in production? Poor Anguirus has to face these 3 bad boys by himself. Gorosaurus should be on the way to help!

I love 54s. Its my favorite version. I always wanted to just by every 54 toy I could find, but never did. I do not own many Hobby toys like MARMITS cause of the high price tags. Then I found this very cheap auction for a MARMIT Godzilla 54 so I went for it. Half the original cost, thats always nice. Not bad for a 6 year old Figure.

Alright, just got home from G-Fest about an hour ago. Only got two new toys. First was the CCP Meltdown '95 Godzilla. Didn't expect to find it, and the price was right. Didn't get the stupid little Hedorah that came with it, but whatever. Mine actually stands straight up, too.

The second purchase, and what could me my new all-time favorite toy, was the Forever Series '62 Godzilla from Bandai. Mint tag, near mint figure. Got a crazy low price on it from Greg C. Big thanks to him for it. Haruo Nakajima signed both feet and I have film and pictures of him doing it. What a great toy. Almost makes me want to keep collecting Bandai's...Maybe I'll just buy all the Forever Series? Probably not, but you never know.

Anyway, two great toys, awesome surprises considering I wasn't planning on buying anything. The whole weekend at G-Fest felt a lot easier not having to worry about getting all the right toys and spending serious mullah doing it. My place in Godzilla fandom is pretty much the movies now, which is alright because I love them all to death. Unless CCP gets off its lazy ass and makes some new Godzilla toys, I could be done buying for some time to come. Leaves more toys for the rest of you young guys to hunt after

I didn't think there was much that could top last week's new toys (see above) and unfortunately this time I was correct. I got the (expensive) Marusan Mechagodzilla repaint today, as well as the Marmit Iron Joe Gorosaurus. Sadly, they both ended up disappointing me quite a bit.

Backtracking just a bit, this is what the original photo of the "metal"(?) release of the Marusan MG initially looked like:

And this is what the figure actually looks like:

It's a shame. The original photo succeeded in making the figure actually look like it was made of metal, while the finished product is much darker and nowhere near as metallic looking. To be fair, on it's own the paint job is actually really cool. The gun metal color really looks great and is aided by some nice subtle patches of blue and copper sprays. In fact, they were able to make the metal finish look like it had worn away with age in some spots such as the chest. And regardless of how it's painted this figure is light years ahead of the original release, which was made out of a bland baby blue vinyl. As a matter of fact, if the actual sculpt on this toy was a little stronger this might have turned out to be a really terrific-looking figure. It's just a shame it doesn't look much like the original photo.


But I was much more disappointed with the Iron Joe Gorosaurus. After the Gigan, Angilas, Megalon and Hedora figures I was expecting something fantastic. Unfortunately, this one falls short on many levels.

First off, and probably the most annoying, is that this figure is in a completely different scale entirely and doesn't fit in with any of the other figures in this line. Here is how it looks with the Angilas:

In fact, this figure is small enough to easily fit in with the original 8" Bandai line. For the most part the paint job satisfies me just fine. My one gripe is how the pink color under the lower jaw simply stops when it reaches the seam on the neck, which doesn't look natural:

But something also seems really off about the sculpt. I think it's primarily the head, which just appears to be a little small and the neck area is a bit lean. I'm not even liking the pose the figure is in. Marmit's Monster Heaven Gorosaurus was looking directly up at the sky. This figure is posed looking directly at the ground, which would have ruined it's display potential if it's awkward scale hadn't already taken care of that.


On it's own this figure really isn't horrible, especially compared to that horrid Bandai Museum figure:

But compared to the rest of the built-up Iron Joe line, Gorosaurus is a serious misfire. I guess my favorite Goro figure will continue to be the classic Bandai toy for the time being.
