Pffft.... You Californians have it all. Especially a state with a blend of different Asian cultures. In Massachusetts, there's nothing like this....Unless that's because I've never out of my city.

It's interesting to see a Korean movie director be fond of kaiju movies. Just goes to show Godzilla Japanese Sci-Fi still have universal appeal. I'm not too surprised about the American sub-plot in The Host. We all know how much Koreans lover their American friends.

Look what I stumbled on, on my recent trek to my favorite record store in Calgary's Inglewood district!

I was kind of tucked away on a street no one probably sees too much of, but I thought it was cool. The graffiti was a nice touch.

Apparently they're airing one TV spot for The Host in one commercial break for every episode airing of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report on Comedy Central. The film looks sweet, and it's cool to see foreign kaiju films get exposure like this in the States.

(Posted this over at the Classic Horror Film Board, and thought I'd copy it here)

Wow, just got back from seeing The Host this afternoon and gotta' say: boy, was I disappointed. I was soooo looking forward to this, I'm actually a little bit down-in-the-dumps about it. There were just so many head-scratching moments that I just completely un-invested in it after a while.

What was the whole virus-scare aspect of it about? Was the government trying to keep the people away by employing a scare tactic? Why not just cordone the area off? Why did they even assume there was a virus? Even after they determine (I guess...) that there's not one, they rig up the poor father of the little girl and drill into his head (?!). Huh? (And apparently it doesn't have any effect on him...)

The family on the run from the authorities (who's pictures are plastered all over the media) drive right through a check-point after giving the guy a pittance of a bribe... huh? Plus, they're driving through the area in a fumigation truck, and to rid himself of the "virus", the father walks behind the truck which is spewing out insecticide. Wouldn't this make him extremely sick? Why are the authorities even employing fumigation trucks (and boats) for a river monster?

As I said, there were just too many instances of confusion or "huh?" for me to enjoy this. Plus, it was unpleasant and dreary. I'm all for it being gritty and realistic, but not to the point of not being fun. It wasn't fun.

A HUGE disappointment for me. Neat monster, though; and the scene where it first comes out of the river is a stunner. I'm afraid that's about it, though. Bummer...

Well, just came back from the 12:30 showing and I gotta say... wow. I loved it. I want to see it again so that maybe the ending'll sit with me a little better (I guess I'm just upset because the cute little girl was killed in the end :cry:

) but on the whole it was fantastic. And I want to see it again. And again. And then buy the DVD.

Though my raving feels a bit half-hearted right now... really it's just because it leaves you in such a somber mood, what with that final shot of the lone shop out there in the dark and snow. Very surreal standing in the theater after that and then the reel spinning off into silence, walking out to a nigh-empty hallway and driving home on a deserted highway.

I digress...

Of the last two movies I've seen in theaters, The Host owns 300. 300 was all pretty visuals and pretty fun. The Host was downright enthralling.
