Strongest Tezuka Film

I say Tokyo S.O.S. The monsters were displayed wonderfully in this film. Mothra on a high point is portrayed splendidly. I just wish she got to be in the fights a bit more. I know how some people don't like the fact that she is in the movie so much, but I think they did it well. She's the 'Queen of the Monsters' she deserves just as much screen-time as the others IMO. Her battle scenes though were spectacular, and the moment she flew into Tokyo, I was enamored. Godzilla was portrayed wonderfully in this film as well, he was ruthless, and mischevious in a sense. Kiryu I thought was being lagged when they displayed him. In GxMG he seemed faster, and more agile, but in this film he was just a slow hunk of metal.

In my opinion, of the three G films that Tezuka directed, GxMG is by far his strongest, followed by GxM. Tokyo SOS looked and felt like a tired rush job, almost as if they combined what Tezuka wanted with Mothra vs. Godzilla'64 in an attempt to boost ticket sales.

I enjoyed SOS over GxMG. I thought the story was well thought out, and I liked the idea of it being a sequel of sorts to the original Mothra. Definately not the best of Godzilla films, though.

But seriously I would have to go with Godzilla X Megagiras, although I only consider it a mediocre movie at best. GXMG and GMMG both strike me as incoherent mess of half thought out and a quarter executed ideas.

I mean the new Godzilla doesn’t even show up until they are sending the final bones on their way. Basically right with the closing of the final cargo door, did they really remove all the bones and pack them up for shipping that fast? The bones are moved and put together in a vast complex, so I guess they planned to build a MG whether or not Godzilla showed up at all. The first movie is vague as to whether or not the bones are even used or if it was just the DNA for the computer. Godzilla doesn’t bother to show up again while MG is being built. MG has power problems in the first movie, having a shorter battery life then most laptops. But in GMMG it is able to fight all night long without anyone worrying about power issues, what they finally got the cold fusion engine online?

I voted Tokyo SOS because I believe it to be one of the best godzilla films. Everything about the film is so well executed IMO and the monster fight scenes are among some of the best the series has to offer. Spfx were excellent as well. Many complain the story was somewhat lacking but I didn't have any problems with it.

About Tezuka's other films:

GXMG was alright, nothing special but ok - much much better than the 93 MG film.

GXM was my least favorite Tezuka film but at the very least, it was better than Destroyer, Space Godzilla and GvsM92 but that truthfully isn't saying much. At the very least, it was mildly entertaining despite being heavily flawed.

I'm beginning to find enjoyment out of all of Tezuka's films. The movies have a very Showa-ish feeling to them in terms of story. GXM's story is very run-of-the-mill, but when watching it recently I realized how many interesting techniques and camera movements were employed. The final fight also gets points for originality (Even if it is a bit goofy). GXMG is also has characters that really act as ciphers, but the story takes enough interesting twists and turns (Such as Mechagodzilla's rampage) that is doesn't matter. The fight is also, once again, very refreshing and well plotted out unlike most of the Heisei series (Or even Godzilla 2000 for that matter). Story-wise, GMMG suffers the most, seeing as its barely more than a remake of Mothra vs Godzilla. However, GMMG boasts the most impressive special effects in the whole series, and an amiable array of fight sequences.

Seriously, how can some of you guys whine about originality in Tezuka's films when we have the Heisei series? Tezuka actually mixes up his camera-work, and doesn't shoot everything through the bland static-camera. Besides, I'm willing to bet that Toho pushed him to use famous monsters like Mechagodzilla and Mothra after GxM bomed. Toho is a company after all, and it needs revenue. Personally, I still feel that all of Tezuka's films are better than Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla: Final Wars.
