I keep hoping Sony is going to announce this movie on BD with real subtitles.

At this point I'd rather 1 quality company pick up GMK and all the other films to release as a box set. It'll never happen, but I can dream right?

I don't find that at all unlikely, I've just ordered the complete ZATOICHI bluray boxed set and I had no idea that would ever happen. It's only a matter of time for Godzilla.

I don't know anything about the rights/licensing for Zatoichi prior to this recent release...but given that the rights situations for a smattering of Godzilla films are basically unknown (Sony's Showa titles rights have lapsed, G85 is in the abyss, KKvG has a complicated rights situation), I'd say the odds of this happening for Godzilla are astronomical.

It would be nice if Universal would at least give us the freaking Jp version for a change.

Universal doesn't have elements for the Japanese version, so even if they wanted to, they couldn't "give it to us" without getting it from Toho first.

I agree, jellydonut25, and Zatoichi is actually a pretty bad comparison to use with Godzilla. Before Criterion, North American rights to the classic Zatoichi films were divided between two companies... Home Vision Entertainment (who was also the distributor for Criterion) had most of the Daiei Zatoichi movies while AnimEigo had the remaining Daiei films and those released by Toho. Home Vision Entertainment was bought by Image Entertainment (who is now Criterion's distributor) and was involved in the new Zatoichi set... look on the packaging and you'll see the logo for RLJ Entertainment, Image's parent company. That put most of the series in Criterion's hands, so all they had to do was pick up the remaining movies when AnimEigo's rights expired.

Godzilla is a very different situation because Toho has been licensing the movies one at a time for decades. Therefore the rights have been spread over many different distributors rather than just one or two like with Zatoichi. Toho's interest is in selling the films, not in selling the films to a single distributor so the companies that have licenses for Godzilla movies now can keep those rights as long as they pay renewal fees... as long as the checks clear, there is 0% chance Toho would try to reacquire the rights so they could then try to sell them to a single licensee. A bird in the hand...

Even if the companies don't renew the rights, that would take a decade or more for most of the films to revert to Toho. Sony's rights for G vs KING GHIDORAH and G vs MOTHRA aren't up until 2019; the other Heisei and Millennium movies not until 2023-2025. Universal has North American rights to KING KONG VS GODZILLA in perpetuity so it's not going anywhere without Universal's say-so. Classic Media renewed in 2005 so they're good for several years. Miramax has held rights to BIOLLANTE since 1990 or so, and negotiated with Toho for a new HD master just last year. And Media Blasters picked up DAM and MEGALON in 2011, so those two are tied up for years.

The only way for there to be a complete series set would be for all of those companies -- and Toho -- to work together. And none of them have shown any interest in doing so.

The Godzilla/Zatoichi comparison does work in one way, though. Criterion released all of the Shintaro Katsu films except the last one which has different rights holders than the others: Shochiku (Japan/international) and Media Blasters (North America).

With region changes from Bluray is there a chance of a subtitled "international set"? (For instance, 95% of the rights are with one company in Australia, which could net us an English dub as well... And all of the films are together in Japan, which shares a common region code with the US on Bluray)

Short Version: Rights to the classic Zatoichi films were split between two companies. When one company's rights lapsed the other got them all.

Godzilla's rights are divided between several companies, and those rights are tied up for many years (and, in one case, forever).

The situations for the two franchise are very different.
