You also gotta keep in mind that Kawakita was working with barley any budget on movies like Space Godzilla. His work on movies like Gvs Biollante is fantastic. Any SPFX man can do great or terrible depending on time and money, and the Heisei series didn't have much of each. Regardless its a pretty flimsy reason to hate a Godzilla movie (they ALL have moments of things like bad miniature vehickes, or visible wires). Calling out Kawakita for bad SPFX work is no sillier than saying the same thing about Tsuburaya. The effects in these movies have all been centered on surrealism and the time and money spent on the productions will either make or break these effects. Both Kawakita and Tsuburaya have had their good and bad moments like every other effects craftsman.
And I find Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 to be one of the best Heisei movies, crappy Rodan prop or not. It certainly has one of the more solid scripts in the Heisei series, and characters that are more interesting than the usual. Godzilla vs. Mothra is better than people give it credit for, even if it gets dull. Space Godzilla is a big turd, yes, but its not because the effects are bad (they ARE bad but there are many more things wrong with that movie, mostly the script)
As far as Gappa goes, it really isn't a good movie, but I guess it has its charm... personally I don't see much reason to watch it when you can watch the exact same movie, practically verbatim, only much better in Gorgo.
