Most Anticipated Films of 2016

Postby klen7 » Sat Jan 02, 2016 11:11 am

It was interesting to see how this played out last year.

Captain America: Civil War - I really dug the previous two Cap'n movies, so this is one i'm looking forward to
Colossal - I really enjoyed Timecrimes, so seeing Vigalondo take on the kaiju genre is really intriguing
John Wick 2 - The first one really came out of nowhere, hoping the second can continue the momentum
Hail Caesar - Coen brothers
Godzilla Resurgence - Hope this gets a domestic release
Star Wars Rogue One - I was looking forward to this more than Force Awakens, hope it lives up to its potential
The Nice Guys - Shane Black
The Witch - The previews for this look legitimately terrifying
A Monster Calls - Solid talents all around involved in this.
Warcraft - I'm game for whatever Duncan Jones takes on at the moment

Morbidly curious about
Doctor Strange - I lost any interest when they cast Cumberbatch
Batman vs Superman - I have no illusions of this being legitimately good with Snyder helming it, but MoS was a hysterical trainwreck
Star Trek Beyond - I hated Into Darkness, hope this can turn the ship around
Suicide Squad - I'm sure this will bolster Hot Topic's quarterly sales, but i'm curious nonetheless
Independence Day Resurgence - Nostalgia
Deadpool - Crosses fingers for a solid action comedy

I'm interested in

Deadpool- I think this is going to be a must see and looks like they've improved greatly over the deadpool we saw in Wolverine 1
Godzilla Resurgeance- Duh
Captain America Civil War- Not a fan of Cap but the last film was great plus this is going to introduce my favorite marvel hero to the marvel cinematic universe\\
Suicide Squad- Looks like a fun movie

Interested in but have my doubts

Batman v Superman- Non of the trailers have hyped me
X-men Apcolypse- The first trailer was interesting plus I'm not a fan of the Apoc design hopefully it's better once I see more of it.

I had a long list, but clicked out by accident...

so I'll just cover the non-blockbusters, since we're all pretty aware of the big movies coming our way:
Midnight Special - The director of Mud and Take Shelter directing a sci-fi action adventure chase movie "inspired by the films of John Carpenter." SUPER Interested.
A Man in the Dark - Fede Alvarez finally returning to direct a movie after his Evil Dead movie.

There are a bunch of others, and maybe later...or another day...when I'm not frustrated at having lost a huge post about like 15-20 other movies (some of which I WANT TO SEE and some of which just tickle my curiosity due to the cast and crew) I'll throw down the list.

One you guys didn't mention:
Great Wall - kaiju
Gills.

Godzilla Resurgence - Naturally, as it's Godzilla
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Despite some flaws, I was really impressed with Godzilla '14 and I think Gareth is just gonna get better. He understands how to build a lot of suspense into action.
A Monster Calls - loved the trailer
Kubo and the Two Strings - Laika stop motion animation and Japanese mythology!
The VVitch - Looks great! Smart horror has made a comeback.

... and Only Yesterday. It's an over 20 year old Ghibli film, but is just now getting a US release by GKIDS.

Who knows if the new Gamera film will get out by the end of the 2016?

Cooled on Marvel this past year, but I'll no doubt see Captain America: Civil War, as I think the Cap movies are there strongest they've done outside GotG. Doubts about Doctor Strange because of the director, but I love the original Ditko comics and seeing how faithful and cool the costume looks I suppose I'm now onboard.

Deadpool
Gods of Egypt
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
The Jungle Book
Ratchet & Clank
Captain America: Civil War
X-Men: Apocalypse
Warcraft
The BFG
The Legend of Tarzan
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad
Gambit
Doctor Strange
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

All that plus Godzilla Resurgence, whenever it gets over here. I'd love to see it in theatres like Attack on Titan 1&2 (which I didn't around to seeing...).

A more complete list:
Deadpool - I'm a little hesitant because the humor from the trailers I've seen is a little too flat and lazy, but I'm just hoping that's not the best of it.
The VVitch - looks scary and atmospheric
Triple 9 - good cast and crew. Maybe a little overly dingy and dark, but it could be really good
Captain America Civil War - I really think Cap has become the most likable of the Marvel movie characters and I'm excited to see how this plays out.
X-Men: Apocalypse - X-Men is my third favorite franchise running right now behind Godzilla and Planet of the Apes, so I'm VERY on board.
Rogue One - Episode VII has sent me from curious to excited. I'm definitely excited to see more Star Wars now.

That's it in terms of EXCITED...I have a bunch of others that I'm curious about: Gambit, Doctor Strange, The BFG, Arms and the Dudes, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Star Trek Beyond, Finding Dory, Warcraft...but each of those has at least one big thing holding me back from being excited, and just ready to wait for reviews.
Gills.

As the Marvel series has gone on Tony Stark has become more and more grating while Cap has become more and more endearing.

In my opinion, of course.

Kung Fu Panda 3
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Captain America: Civil War
X Men: Apocalypse
TMNT: Out of the Shadows
Independence Day: Resurgence
Ice Age: Collision Course
Star Trek Beyond
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Basically just searched Boxofficemojo and came up with a list of films I plan on seeing (some for my kids obviously). "Anticipation" may be a bit strong of a word. I have seen previews for a few of these, and not one really "wowed" me. My hope is that a year from now, in January 2017 I can look back at this list of Sequels, and spinoffs of established franchises, and something new and unexpected will have arisen, that makes me excited to see it. I chose not to include Godzilla: Resurgence because as of yet, there are no details for North American distribution, and, sadly, I don't see myself being in Japan any time soon.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

I'm a little annoyed with this film's marketing... the fortune cookies at my local chinese restaurant now have advertisements for KFP3 with "funny" quips about eating rather than fortunes...i feel like that is stepping over some sort of unspoken line.

I completely agree. It's interesting to me how many people still seem to LOVE RDJ and the box office certainly supports that notion, but definitely by the end of Age of Ultron I started feeling like I could be happy being done with him, and I'm certainly finding myself pulled more and more toward Cap.

To be fair, he's being written like he is in the comics, and right now, Stark is a complete asshat. Sure, he's always been an ahole, but the last few years of the comics have taken it to the wide extreme.

You'd think so... But the current crop of Marvel comics seems to be going out of its way to alienate movie fans. "Hey you liked Guardians of the Galaxy? Well here's a GotG book without Star Lord, it has Kitty Pride and Venom though".... Seems like bad business to me, but they are a billion dollar company and I'm not.

Well he came from space, so GotG got the idea to stumble upon a planet filled with symbiotes. I have more of an issue with him as a hero... Also why do the Avengers need Deadpool?

Venom isn't that interesting aside from his early encounters with Spider-Man anyway. He should have existed as more of a one-off, but got so popular they had to keep bringing him back.

I love the Flash Thompson Agent Venom stuff, it was the most interesting Venom has been since those early appearances.

Most anticipated is probably, just doing the ten most anticipated
Godzilla: Resurgence
Suicide Squad - DAT NEW TRAILER WUZ FUNNNN
Captain America: Civil War
Deadpool
X-Men: Apocalypse
Star Trek: Beyond
Doctor Strange
Star Wars: Rogue One
Ghostbusters
Warcraft

I don't think the comics get influenced by the movies THAT much. It seems like, anymore, it's just that they tend to change the costumes or push characters in those films (Ant-Man getting a new on-going before the film, though that comic was great.)

So how has your anticipation ended up?

In my quote from earlier I'm going to bold the ones I enjoyed (and I've seen them all that have come out so far except Panda 3):

Dr Kain wrote:I haven't really bothered to look at what is coming out this year, but what I do plan to see no matter what:

Doctor Strange - This is the movie I want to see the most of the year. Cumberbatch is going to rock as Strange!!

Viewed:
Captain America: Civil War - I liked it better than the Avenger flicks, but probably 3rd for Captain America Films
Godzilla Resurgence - I liked this, need to see it again
The Nice Guys - I liked this, would be fine with a sequel, or as a one off like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Star Trek Beyond - It was fine. Better than Into Darkness , but there are some big issues that could have easily been fixed
Independence Day Resurgence - Liked it better than i thought i would
Deadpool - A solid action comedy, i fear for all the imitations

Not out yet:
Colossal - Still highly anticipated based on the reviews
John Wick 2 - Digging the trailer, the build up to unleashing the character in the first film is gone, so they have their work cut out for a worthy sequel
Star Wars Rogue One - Haven't watched the second trailer, will try to go into the theater knowing as little as possible
A Monster Calls - I forgot about this film
Doctor Strange - Less interested than ever now that the trailers are out. Planning to skip

Haven't seen:
Hail Caesar - Waiting for it to come to one the streaming services or movie channels i pay for.
The Witch - Probably watch this before Halloween, its on Amazon Prime streaming
Warcraft - Don't know why i missed this
Batman vs Superman - Waiting for it to come to one the streaming services or movie channels i pay for.
Suicide Squad - Waiting for it to come to one the streaming services or movie channels i pay for.

Well, I loved Shin Godzilla and Kubo. Two of my anticipated ones, Rogue One and A Monster Calls, haven't come out yet. Need to see The Witch, and two films I missed (that weren't on my radar) that I want to see are The Nice Guys and High Rise.

It was a pretty light year for movies for me. I'm more looking forward to next year, which is jam packed with favorite franchises and favorite directors for me.

I've seen 32 movies this year and more than half of them have been average to down right dreadful.
