YOUR Top 10 Favorite Movies of the Year (2014)

So, 2014 is over (boo. It was a good year for me), and though I'm sure we've not all seen all the movies we wanted to, I want to know what your favorite movies of the year were/are.

My List:
1.) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
2.) Godzilla
3.) Snowpiercer
4.) X-Men: Days of Future Past
5.) 22 Jump Street
6.) Edge of Tomorrow
7.) Interstellar
8.) The Babadook
9.) Captain America: The Winter Soldier
10.) The Raid 2

Honorable Mentions: Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, The Lego Movie, The Rover, Guardians of the Galaxy
DIShonorable Mentions (my most hated movies of the year): The Legend of Hercules, Divergent, Need for Speed, Tusk, TMNT

Overall, I thought it was a GREAT year for movies, personally. Snowpiercer and The Babadook were nice surprises and the stuff I was looking forward to all pretty much delivered. Pretty much everything in my honorable mentions was a real nice surprise too...

I mean, how many of us first heard the words "LEGO MOVIE" and groaned?
Who cared about a Robert Pattinson gritty Mad Max-ish type movie?
How many people thought Guardians would be Marvel's first flop and perhaps even the straw to break the superhero movie camel's back?
Did anybody expect the follow-up to the woefully average Dead Snow to be a truly delightful, funny zombie movie?

And yet every one of those movies was enjoyable, just not as much (for me) as any of my top 10 movies. And obviously, this list is somewhat fluid...I'm expecting at least 2 more movies I really love out of that bunch of Stuff I Wanna See, which will make it an awesome year for movies. A year where Guardians of the Galaxy (which does seem to get better on re-watches for me, but I find the Knowhere sequence pretty much is the thing that makes the movie feel like it's starting to drag and what keeps me from loving it) is my least favorite of my favorite movies of the year is a damn good year for movies.

So far I've actually seen just 10 movies that came out in 2014.

A Million Ways to Die in the West
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

I liked them all. Well, I don't recall disliking Paranormal Activity but I really can't remember much of what happened in it, so that's how memorable it was. A Million Ways to Die in the West was disappointing the first time I saw it because it's not nearly as funny as Ted, but I watched it again and it really is a funny comedy on its own, minus the moments where it falls back on toilet humor.

Still a ton of 2014 movies that I want to see: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Birdman, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Five, Interstellar, Gone Girl, The Lego Movie, Tusk, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wild, The Hobbit, Snowpiercer, The Babadook, Fury, The Imitation Game, Selma, Boyhood, American Sniper, Big Eyes, Foxcatcher, The Theory of Everything

My list of 2014 movies that i still haven't seen is woefully long.. so here is a top 8.. there were other 2014 movies i saw, but i wouldn't put them in even as contenders.

1.) Godzilla
2.) Snowpiercer (debated putting this first, but rewatchability puts the big G in number 1)
3.) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Hope they maintain the story quality in the third film)
4.) Guardians of the Galaxy (fun)
5.) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (exciting)
6.) The Raid 2 (punch punch punch)
7.) Lego Movie (more fun than i would have expected)
8.) Edge of Tomorrow

I have been hearing great things about 'The Guest' and 'Babadook' so those may round out the top 10, but i still want to see Birdman, Big Hero 6, Fury, Gone Girl, John Wick, Nightcrawler, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Wish I was Here, Grand Budapest Hotel, Foxcatcher, The Rover and Predestination.

I should also note that I wasn't sure if I should put The Wind Rises as an honorable mention. It's a 2013 film, but if you live in America, like I do, then you couldn't really see it until 2014...

but it would have made the Honorable Mentions list and not cracked the top 10. I liked it a LOT, but not the way I liked those other movies.

Good riddance to 2014. It was the worst year I have had to live through since 1998. Not just for movies, but just for life in general.

Anyway, my top favorite movies of 2014 are:

1. Double Indemnity
2. The Godfather II
3. The Godfather
4. Vertigo
5. A Touch of Evil
6. The Birds
7. Rear Window
8. North by Northwest
9. The Killing
10. Night of the Hunter

Yes, that is my actual list. I enjoyed seeing all of those movies for the first time ever more than I enjoyed any movie actually released in 2014.

HOWEVER, is my list of the movies that did come out in 2014:

Dishonorable mentions go to Hunger Games 3 of 4 of 1 of 2 and The Hobbit for being unnecessary.

Honorable mentions go to Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods and The Wind Rises for being down right phenomenal movies but they were only released in the US in 2014.

One day I'll check out John Wick, Gone Girl, and Birdman as I have been told those are all incredible movies. Nevertheless, I only saw 28 movies in the theater this year, which is half of what I saw last year in the theater and I thought this year was even worse. It's not that the movies were all terrible, but there was not a single movie that made me go, "OH MY GOD THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!"

My List:

1) Big Hero 6 - Though sort of predictable at times, this movie managed to hit me "the feels," as it were. Baymax is awesome.

2-3) Captain America 2 AND Guardians of the Galaxy - These were tied for me. I like both films for different reasons. Captain America was a straight forward action movie with incredible fight scenes. Guardians...well Chris Pratt is hilarious. I just enjoyed the movie a ton. I can't really pick one film over the other.

4) X-Men: DoFP - This is the best X-Men film since X2. I really loved the action sequences and the fact that they combined what was formerly two distinct X Universes and eliminated the horrible outcomes of X3.

5)Godzilla - I don't think G14 quite lived up to the hype and I probably would have handled some things differently.The score really falls flat except for the main Godzilla theme. BUT... the movie is a well-made, grounded Godzilla film and introduces a solid universe to work with in any sequels. I liked the Mutos, and the way Godzilla kills them both had me grinning from ear to ear.

6) Snowpiercer - I wasn't quite prepared for this movie. The characters, the premise, and the eventual twists and turns...I don't think I had any idea going in what this movie was about. It's a really good sci-fi film with a stellar cast.

7) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - I'm a fan of this movie series. I have never read the books, but for what it is, I have really enjoyed it.

That's all I really had a chance to see this year. There are some movies I need to watch (like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Interstellar, and The Hobbit...sorry Jelly).

I just don't even REMOTELY agree that this was a lackluster year for movies.

I look back at my favorites of 2013 and I don't know if any of them aside from Pacific Rim would crack my top 5 this year and I know stuff like Don Jon, The Wolverine, American Hustle and Rush wouldn't make more than my honorable mentions.

And that's without having seen Gone Girl, The Drop, The Guest, Whiplash and Nightcrawler, all of which I've seen on various people's top 10 to 15 lists for the year.

I went back and re-watched DOFP last week and was FLOORED by how much I enjoyed it. It seemed to pop more, I picked up on more of the stuff I liked and almost didn't even notice some of the stuff that had bothered me the first time around.
And that's not in my top spot, because I didn't enjoy it as much as Snowpiercer or Godzilla or the deliciousness that was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

And all of the ones in bold were either below average (Hobbit) to down right terrible (Transcendence, worst movie of the year). And then there were other pieces of garbage like Bayformers 4, TMNT, Lucy, Maleficent, that I refuse to spend money on.

As for 2013, I thought that year sucked too. Pacific Rim is not even in my top 10 nor is it even close. It was average at best. Too many cliches, no development, and all action with a stupid concept. Ron Perlman and the bat monster are the only stand outs from the movie.

DoFP was a great movie, but not as good as First Class. I do agree with you on Dawn though.

However, I said it was a lackluster year for movies because there was not a single movie that wowed me. When I'm wowed by movies from the 40s, 50s, and 70s over the movies coming out today, there is a problem.

I ranked eleven movies because that's all I saw (of movies that were released in 2014 anyway) and I figured, "why not?" In order of my personal enjoyment, and numbers 2, 3, and 4 are pretty much all tied for second place. But I think If I was absolutely forced to break the tie, that's the order they'd wind up in. Maybe.

You know, I almost included Frozen on my list since it's still plastered everywhere on social media...except that was 2013. Talk about overexposure.

But I also didn't like it, even a little bit. I was bored halfway through it. :shrug:

I also didn't include "Teenage Mutant Ninja Transformers" because it sucked. TMNT is basically just the plot from Transformers mixed in with Turtles AND the same basic character archetypes from Bayformers...bleh.
