So Oct is coming up and I plan to finally watch the Halloween series.

So to get ready, I am starting to go through the list now to find where I can watch each movie. Out of all of the Halloween movies, Netflix only has the 6th movie. -_-

I got to Vudu, they have the 2nd, 3rd, Resurrection, and the 6th movie, but they want $3 a piece to watch them.

I go to Amazon, they have H20 and the 6th movie, but they also want $3 to watch them.

I go to ON Demand, they have 2 and 3, but Comcast wants $4 to watch them.

And nothing at all with Redbox.

WHAT THE ****!!?? These movies are over 20 years old. They should be no more than $1 to rent, if not free. And why the hell does no one have the first, fourth, and fifth movies to the series? Okay, I'm planning to buy the first one when it comes out on this month on BD, but why are 4 and 5 not even available to rent?

And with that rant brings me to the question of the topic, where do you guys go to rent movies? Do they actually have the movies you want to watch? What do you do when they don't?

The internet. I'd pay for any legitimate service that actually had all the movies I'd want to rent whenever I wanted to rent them, but I had tried non-streaming Netflix once upon a time and hated waiting days/weeks/months for my movies, and the streaming services all lack.

I used to go to Family Video, because they would always do like 2 for a dollar rentals (and honestly, the first time I saw it, I went a little beserk and rented like 20 movies, because i didn't realize how often they do it), but the nearest FV is up near Dallas-Fort Worth.

There's a blockbuster basically down the street, but I rarely even go in there.

Tom, he probably meant Netflix Streaming. My "Chain of Renting"™ goes as follows: My copy > Netflix Streaming > Netflix DVD > Friends DVD collections > Family Video > Give up or be driven by heavenly forces to purchase a copy from Amazon.com.

I'm sure the managment at Netflix would love to have all of their content available for streaming - it would only encourage more subscribers, and thus bring in more money. However, anything that leads to fewer discs being sold (whether they're sold to consumers or sold to Neflix) is going to meet with opposition from the license holders, so more and more studios seem to be either refusing to let Netflix stream certain content, or charging prohibitive for the rights to stream that content (which would seem to just encourage more piracy, which looks like a flaw int heir plan...).

My public library has a great selection of classic and foreign films - which is more the stuff I'm interested in (Netflix just doesn't have a good enough selection for me). I've thought of subscribing to Hulu Plus for all the Criterion stuff (including a whole lot of movies they've yet to release on physical media).

Barnes and Noble is the only place with a good selection. Pricey, but frequently has great sales... and it seems the regular prices have begun to lower a bit lately (at least of items that have been out for a while).

Fry's tends to have a very good selection, they match online prices, and the stores are decorated in awesome styles - the nearest to me has a great display centered around a '64 style Godzilla figure.

As certain holidays approach, I've noticed Netflix will offer more titles related to such holidays, just wait a couple of weeks. As for renting, now that all the BBV's are gone, I will check the Red Box occasionally, but if I cant stream on Netflix or Hulu, then I'll check Youtube, or some other quesitonable means to find what I want. Pretty much everythign mainstream is obtainable one way or anotheer, there are just some niche things I'd like to see that I dont have access to, and if I cant stream it, I wont watch it (sorry just had to muych bad luck w/torrents)

Kain I went to Neflix's website and searched Halloween, your going to have to get a disc plan if you want to watch them. Or torrent them and stream to the PS3 that way.

Just a few general thoughts from this discussion:

Netflix has a FANTASTIC selection, IF you still do the discs-in-the-mail part (I just got the MST3K GvsMegalon disc for Pete's sake!!). I love their streaming (it has improved greatly in the last few years) but if you're really a diehard movie fan then the discs by mail is still a must. I'm on the two discs per month plan with bluray and it's so cheap it's totally worth it.

Hulu's content from Criterion alone is worth the subscription price. Everything else they offer is just gravy.

Finally, bestbuy price matches amazon.com in store. Just pull up amazon on your phone at checkout. When it comes to home electronics and popular/new movies, I buy more stuff from BB than amazon now b/c I can physically pick it out myself. And I get it immediately. And now that amazon charges sales tax in TX, I'm not even losing money in that regard... And my best buy still has a decent selection of newish release and popular catalogue titles. I was even able to get the GvsBiollante BD there and still see it and the mst3k Gamera set from time to time. But I do live in an area where the housing market is booming from the oil & gas industry and the majority of all the new houses being built have some sort of home theater room, so people in this area probably still buy a lot more movies than many other areas of the country... The movie poster store I posted about a few weeks ago mentioned this as being a major factor in their success and ability to open up a full gallery. Everybody wants an original poster or two in their hometheater rooms.
