1st person narrative in a novel CAN work...but I think it's difficult to pull off I think Duma Key is the only one I've ever read that gripped me the whole time...

A buddy of mine sent me something he wrote to look over, and man, I dunno how to tell him that his writing is borderline juvenile. I'm on pg 50, and I have like 25 pages of notes and corrections...maybe it's just me, just the way I'm reading it...or maybe I'm trying to conform it too much to my own writing style, but...

The best way for me to describe it is that it reads like someone telling the story orally instead of an author writing it. Does that make sense to any of our MZ writers out there?

Well, I definitely exaggerated/misrepresented the notes and corrections. He sent me a .pdf, not a Word file, so every time I had a grammar change to make, I copied the line of text, referenced the page it's on, and copied intoa word file. That, more than anything else is what was bugging me about it. The story not clicking with me just was what it was, I mean, not every story is gonna click with everyone...but I'm just sitting there, time after time adding in commas, changing periods to question marks, fixing run-on sentences, like "Wait, you want to WRITE professionally?"

Thats why there are professional editors. Mrs Klen7 used to be an editor for a publisher and she said some books it felt like she was practically rewriting due to the same scenario you just mentioned.

Yeh... it might have had something to do with the particular publishers she worked for... one had a definite political leaning and published a lot of the books that are "written" by the talking head types you see on the 24hr news stations... the other was a scientific journal type, so most of the authors writing probably came second to their research fields... Anyway, she hated it.. lots of tedious work, almost no credit.. so she went back to school and got an engineering degree.

That's always an awkward position to be in, especially if said person doesn't have thick skin. Nobody's good from the start, but some people also "got it" more than others and it hurts to have someone give you something that is reeeeally bad and expect you to comment.
