I'm really, really excited about Hellboy meeting the Krampus this December.



When I first heard of the Krampus over a decade ago I'm pretty sure my second or third thought was "okay, when's Hellboy gonna fight him?"

So I started reading the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Fantastic Four run and the issue I just read had the quartet taking on their most deadliest foes thus far, debt collectors and bankruptcy.

^It's amazing that in the '60s when Lee/Kirby/Ditko were doing there thing in practically every title you felt the heroes were always on shaky ground: teams were always on the verge of breaking up, heroes were always contemplating quitting heroing, and the FF were always about to be thrown out of their building!

It will be so nice to finally read the stuff leading up to the Alan Moore run since it sucks starting at issue 20 and not knowing what happened before it.

^Ooooooooo. That's a must-have right there. It includes the initial short story from House of Secrets, right?

^I have the six paperbacks collecting the Moore run (definitely my favorite thing Moore did for DC), but if I get this Omnibus I'd probably want a matching Moore one!

Speaking of DC Omnibuses: Jack Kirby's Fourth World books and Kamandi are getting the omnibus treatment in a few months (in addition to several paperback collections of things like The Demon and Challengers of the Unknown) and I am excite! DC's doing a far better job of celebrating Kirby's 100th than Marvel which has done.

^ DC is also putting out several new series or miniseries specifically paying homage to Kirby. Just seems to me they're making a bigger deal out of it.

Of course, when it comes to Marvel Studios it looks like we're finally getting movies that look like Kirby comics with Ragnarok and Black Panther.

Well, since you haven’t seen it, go watch it! It’s on Netflix right now. I thought it was pretty great (for what it’s worth, I knew pretty much NOTHING about the character going in other than seeing a few comic covers over the years). But it is AMAZING how well they translated the classic psychedelic look of those comics to live action.

^ Need to see it, but the trailers seemed to show Strange as basically a mystical version of Tony Stark personality-wise and that kinda put me off.

Anyway, someone dropped their Disney comics collection at my local comics collection and they've all gone into the $1 comic boxes. All late '80s/early '90s stuff, I bought a bunch and now I'm looking over it and I realize I now have an almost complete collection of Uncle Scrooge and Uncle Scrooge Adventures issues from when they were published by the first incarnation of Gladstone Publishing. This is cool, because it is probably my favorite era of Scrooge comics, as it was when the hardcore fans took over the license years after all these comics vanishing from public consciousness. They reprinted tons of the original Carl Barks stories (often with commentary and supplemental info), starting bringing over the European stories for the first time (most Americans had no idea these comics were popular in foreign countries where new material was still being published), and published the very first duck comics from the new master: Don Rosa! The first Rosa issue ('The Son of the Sun', issue #219) is actually one of four issues I'm still missing, but funnily enough they even seemed to realize what a momentous occasion it was back then, as #218 ends promising something really special in the following issue.

I hope we eventually get some of Mizuki's yokai encyclopedias translated. I have one in Japanese and its just amazing because of the art.
