I've herd about this Berganza guy for years. I don't know if it was the case recently, but at one point apparently DC's solution was just to keep all women out of the Superman department so the guy wouldn't be exposed to any women at all.

Usagi Yojimbo is ending next year?!

Actually, no, rather: the ongoing series is ending next year.

Actually, that's not quite true either: apparently the thought on the part of Dark Horse is that that high numbering in the corner (issue #163 is the latest) is intimidating for new readers. Of course, Stan Sakai's storytelling is such that you could really jump in at any time, so starting in March the series will adopt a miniseries format. Stan says nothing about they way he works will change, but issue #166 will be labeled as "Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden, Part 1 of 7." The numbering will continue for fans on the inside cover, and will actually feature an additional overall series number which will include the issues published by Fantagraphics and Mirage back in the '80s and '90s.

When asked if this means the end of one issue stories in favor of only long story arcs Sakai said no, and that the "miniseries" should be thought of more as pre-labeling what the collected issues will be called when collected into trade.

Apparently Dark Horse has lost the Conan the Barbarian license to Marvel. I'm a smidge worried for Dark Horse, having already lost their lucrative Star Wars license a few years ago, but even beyond that it's apparently tough all-around for monthly comics sales right now. I think last year's best selling item from DH was their Zelda book and I'm not even sure what that was (an art book?).

I was thinkin' the other day about if I opened a comic shop how'd I'd go about it and I realized I wouldn't even bother with monthly issues. I just make it like a bookstore with tpbs/graphic novels/hardcovers and manga and a selection of prose books.

^I still haven't read the latest Kitaro volume that I got for Christmas.

Tons of classic manga releases I'm looking forward to this year: Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, and Devilman! All translated by Zack Davisson. Besides Galaxy Express 999 I can't think of another classic manga on my wishlist.

^Yeah, that's one I can see happening. Alita currently getting a rerelease is a big deal, and I think The Guyver would be kinda similar.

^James Cameron (who's producing the new film) has had the rights and been trying to make a Battle Angel Alita movie for like two decades now. It just so happened that it eventually got made!

... is my way of saying I bought the new tpb collection of Jack Kirby's original run on The Demon at my local shop. I don't have a very expansive pull-list, so when they actually carry a tpb or hardcover I want (and they often don't, as I have somewhat eclectic tastes) I try to buy it from them. Support your local shops!



Oh, and today at my library's used bookstore I made quite a discovery: in the foreign language section a shabby, yellowed old copy of the first volume of the Kamen Rider ZX manga (in Japanese, of course). I bought it for a quarter!

While comics shops and single issues struggle, elsewhere comics flourish. One of the biggest areas of growth is comics young people. Now, DC and Marvel have frequently taken stabs at kid's comics, but they tend to falter because... well, they're sold as single issue comics sold in comic shops. Unless you've got a parent or big brother who's already a comic store frequenter that's a pretty big barrier, eh?

DC is getting real serious about this: two new graphic novel lines, for kids and young teens, made by an all-star team of YA comic creators.

French studio Gaumont (the oldest film company in the world, and recently expanding into the American market) and James Wan's (Saw/Insidious/Conjuring/Fast and the Furious/Aquaman director) production company are making the CGI animated series, along with Dark Horse and Stan Sakai.

This is something Stan Sakai has wanted for, well, decades. So happy it's finally happening.
