Well, Kain and Jelly, you were right. Despite both my PS3 and PS4 being totally up to date, it was the disc trying to connect to the internet and load trailers causing the issue. I feel rather stupid, but I’m glad I figured out the issue. And thankfully a least one of the stores I bought from yesterday was willing to let me return an open disc for a full refund, so I’m not screwed into owning two copies.

Still, that’s really frustrating that I’ll have to disable the internet any time I want to watch this disc. I’ve never had that problem before with any disc, and I have tons of universal BDs.

Ah well, at least I get to finally veg out in happytime dinoland tonight

How often are you really gonna watch the movie though? Shouldn't be TOO big an inconvenience.

I know for me, the answer would be, "Dear GOD never again. Oh holy sweet merciful Jesus please no."

Halloween - Need I say more? 10/10.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - Finally! I know it’s not a “good” movie, but I really enjoy the heck out of this one. It’s a low budget Dino schlockfest reminiscent of all the fun stop-motion/men in suits/reptiles-with-rubber-fins stuff from the 50’s and 60’s but with a much much bigger budget.


This movie has EVERYTHING! Dinosaurs, pterodactyls, erupting volcanoes, stereotyping galore, evil killer geneto monster, and human hamsterball high dive!

Lol.

And having it fresh in my mind, I couldn’t help and go re-read your list of sins this movie commits, Jelly. Most of them I have no arguement or justification for, but I have a few counter points.

-Why is the guy who respected the animals and identified more with animals than humans and hated the way the dinosaurs were treated in the first movie suddenly being fine with them all dying in the second movie?

He’s not. As exemplified by his actions more than once. Logically he knows it’s probably better that they die and he tries to put on a tough facade. But when it comes to it, he always sides with saving the dinos.

-Who scored this movie? A brachiosaurus farting into a tuba?

Michael Giacchino. He’s done lots of great scores. I thought this one was fine?

Actually, many will fire underwater. The range is intensely short, but putting the barrel against the glass/plastic and the bullet would likely go through. There’s actually a mythbusters knockoff show I watched recently that tested EXACTLY that (shooting through a car window with the gun and the car underwater) with real guns and real windshields. It CAN work.

Nope. But it makes for a fun action scene!

-Why would you buy a dinosaur to kill someone if you need a gun to make the dinosaur work? Why not just use a gun?

Yeah that was kinda silly. I get they were basing the idea on the smart bombs of the 90’s (first gulf war) where ground soldiers “painted” the target with a handheld laser while the plane dropped the bomb, but they didn’t really think it through well enough.

-Even $10 million for a dinosaur seems pretty cheap. The investment on the Indo Raptor had to have been in the hundreds of millions range. Selling for $30 million kinda sucks.

I agree with you here. The prices felt WAY too low.

And smile. Yep.

I guess bottom line is, I just like dinosaur movies. I don’t care if they’re good or bad, as long as I find them fun and entertaining. I mean, for Pete’s sake, I like this movie:

Fallen Kingdom had that Doug McClure vibe that none of the JP sequels before it managed to reach.

Amazon continues to deliver some Rifftrax gems. the most recent being Laser Mission (1989) Featuring Brandon Lee , and Ernest Borgnine. The film is laughably bad, and features almost zero lasers, despite the films title. The Rifftrax crew kept the laughs coming as there are enemy soldiers from many ethnicities, all with horrible accents.

Fun fact- My father was a HUGE Bruce Lee fan, and when he suggested *I* have the same name as his son, my mom agreed since she heard the name from then TV executive Brandon Tartikoff and liked it.

Halloween II - Solid sequel despite issues. 8/10.

Last weekend I watch the independent artsy horror thriller Nick Cage film "Mandy" I loved it. It's hauntingly beautiful, like an acid trip. It's a movie lover's film.

^ Mandy is already on-demand, but I'm waiting and hoping that the theatrical release will expand to my neck of the woods. Really psyched for this movie.

Having grown up watching Doug McClure's creature features on the big screen, I could see that vibe, but I find Owen to be less charming than any of Doug's characters.

Upgrade - Jesus, why is it that every cyber punk movie coming out lately has been able to do Ghost in the Shell better than the god damned Ghost in the Shell movie? Clearly it wasn't rocket science! Anyway, this was pretty good although there were a couple of areas I really felt they could have done more with (like when he meets the hacker) and the ending had a nice twist I didn't see coming. An enjoyable film with some good music, so I give it an 8/10.

Upgrade might just be the overlooked gem of the year.

The Witch - Not as good as it was the first time I saw it in theaters, but still a pretty solid movie overall. I love how it shows the mental breakdown of the family while making you wonder if it is indeed being caused by the supernatural or if they are just bringing that aspect upon themselves for being such hateful people. Well, maybe hateful isn't the right term, but they're quite dysfunctional. It feels like a Hammer film from the 70s mixed with the psychological aspects of The Shining. I'm sticking to my 8/10 score

Did you forget Black Panther and Infinity War? Those are two of the best movies of the year.

Recently watched Sion Sono's Tokyo Vampire Hotel :
This could have been a really fun, crazy movie about vampires keeping humans trapped inside a hotel that’s also inside a vampire princess’s vagina who also is inside the hotel and IS the hotel, and the vampires also either faking the apocalypse, or causing the apocalypse or using the inevitability of the apocalypse (the show gives an answer but in a movie you could spin it any way), in order to force the humans to stay inside this hotel that’s also a vagina and also a vampire and also has the vampire whose vagina it is inside it, and force the humans to all have sex with each other and breed so they can have a ready supply of blood and the humans can avoid the apocalypse (or just get tricked into giving away easy blood, depending on the reality of this apocalypse), and the humans rebelling because the principle of being used as livestock essentially...


And it IS that for a few episodes, but then it basically ends in episode 7, and also a couple early ones don’t really have any bearing and also there’s this subplot about a rival group of vampires that doesn’t really go anywhere and also there’s all this stuff about a chosen one that doesn’t add or change much of anything.

So it’s this cool crazy good idea obfuscated by all this half baked crap and given WAY too much padding

Oh yeah...in episode 7 (I think) there’s a big set piece in a hallway and the CGI blood is out of control bad. It’s used at other times too and CGI blood is never good but it’s CRAZY awful in this scene. Meanwhile there’s another scene soaked with SO MUCH real blood that you have to wonder if they used it all there and forgot there were more scenes or something

Somewhat curious to see the theatrical cut, but if the ending is as problematic as the ending of this, then I wouldn't rush.
Really disappointing. It had potential, but Sono just lost it completely at the 3/4 mark.

i've been keeping up with most of the movies i wanted to see this year. The only things left on my list are 'Creed II' and 'Bad Times at the El Royale'

Rampage and Meg were both a lot of fun for me, but not much else this year jumping out for buying on BD
