Deadpool 2 - That may be the best post-credit scene of all time!!! Not as good as the first, but still a fun time. 8/10.

I like to watch this movie to check if my tear ducts are still working... yup, they still work.

I think Gene Tierney is quite possibly the most beautiful human being to ever be photographed. Oh, and Bernard Hermann's score for this is one of the greatest of all time.

Black Panther - It's got some very high highs (Killmonger and MBJ in general, the whole representation thing) and some REALLY low lows...that CGI is an ABSOLUTE JOKE. It's pre-vis level nonsense.

/Frankly, I don't even know why we bother talking about CGI anymore. It's there, we know it's there, that's pretty much all there is to say about it.

Anyway,

Kamen Rider Heisei Generations Final - Quite good. The best Kamen Rider movie since the Fourze/OOO one. 9/10.

^I agree with Jelly. Some of the CGI in Black Panther is quite bad - which is a shame, because otherwise visually (the costuming and sets) it is the most beautiful Marvel movie.

I mean, BAD CGI is just as offensive to me as BAD practical effects, ESPECIALLY from large budget productions that can do better. It’s lazy and pulls me out of the movie. When the car went to pieces in Black Panther I had to pause and take a leak out of frustration.

Black Panther also suffers from a very meandering, borderline nonsensical first 45 minutes or so where stuff just happens from scene to scene with no real connective tissue....and a criminal underuse of Andy Serkis’ really fun performance.
It’s a slightly above average Marvel movie. I’m glad I didn’t see it in theaters

I thought Black Panther was probably the best Marvel Studios movie.

Of course, best films based on Marvel comics are still Spider-Man 2 and Blade II!

As for the why to the bad CGI? I think it's probably just the time budgeted. These release dates are set in stone, so if they realized they needed a few more months of rendering deep into production, well, no can do.

Ah, Zeiram: another one of those movies that's been on my radar for half my lifetime that I still haven't watched.

I think Jelly's assessment of Black Panther is spot on.

And Black Panther and Spider-Man 2 the best Marvel films? lhb, I like you. I really do. But you have TERRIBLE taste in comic book movies!

^ I said Panther was one of (if not 'the best') MCU films, not Marvel films overall, where I listed "Blade II"

Of course, the best 'comic book movies' are Hellboy II, the second Lone Wolf and Cub movie, the second Female Prisoner Scorpion movie, Akira, Nausicaä, Speed Racer, Superman (1978), Spider-Man 2, Blade II, and Robocop (which isn't based on a comic, but hugely indebted to Judge Dredd and also very much a superhero so I think it counts).

But Whistler had no busines being resurrected (especially when he dies again in the next film).

^ All I'm sayin' is that if you have a choice to put Kris Kristofferson in your movie you should.

I'll make no defense of Blade Trinity, as it's abysmal.

I think MCU has cracked the code on making enjoyable movies, so I like most of these movies better than other films that come out the same year, whereas i haven't liked anything from the DCU. I really dont remember Incredible Hulk, and i liked Doctor Strange better as a supporting character in Infinity War than as the protagonist in his own film, but I can say a lot a nice things about any of these

See, I didn't even care about the bad CGI in The Matrix Reloaded when Neo fought all of those Smiths. I was too busy enjoying the fight choreography and music to care.

Hell, if I can still enjoy Shin Godzilla despite its bad PS4 graphics, I can enjoy any movie with bad CGI. Same goes for that adaptation of A Sound of Thunder 15 years ago.

Well, Reloaded harkens back to something like Jurassic Park or pre-Jurassic Park or anything like that....it was fine then....but we're SEVERAL years beyond that now and a lot of movies HAVE done better. We SHOULD be doing better. Black Panther was as bad (if not worse)

Godzilla 1985 (HD reconstruction by Red Menace) - I've had this for some time and just now got around to watching it. It's been years since I've watched the American version. It was a fun trip down memory lane, but I can say with certainty that I prefer the original Japanese version. The editing does improve the pacing a bit, but it also introduces some nonsensical timeline errors. Sometimes it just bounces back and forth between various unrelated scenes rapidly without explanation in a haphazard way, and sometimes it just introduces direct continuity errors (like three back to back shots of Godzilla in a row where he goes from emerging from the water, to swimming face down in it, to standing upright in it in the span of a few seconds).

Basically, they had a decent idea of tightening up the pace but they obviously did it as cheaply as possible and the results are rather sloppy.

I do like the high pitched scream and Raymond Burr voice-over finale though.

And Red Menace did an AMAZING job rebuilding this version with the available materials.

Saw Porco Rosso in the theater and dang is this movie a delight. I know Miyazaki has created far weightier and ambitious films, but you just sense he's having so much fun making this one. An advantage of seeing it in a crowd for the first time; now I know were some of the big laugh moments are, which is obvious when you see a film for the first time in theaters, but can be very surprising if you're very familiar with the film from home viewing beforehand.
