POTC: Dead Men Tell No Tales- Saw this was on Netflix, and figured, I'd give it a shot. After 15 minuets I was bored and stopped watching, then yesterday my kids begged me to watch it, so we did...all the way through...I don't think I laughed once. Johnny Depp didn't even seem to care despite the fact it had been 6 years since the last film. (The longest gap of any time in the series). You'd think with more time, they'd come up with a more compelling story. While many disliked the 4th film, I actually appreciated its fresh take, and new characters. I wanted to see what happened with the young priest & the Mermaid, and what about Blackbeard's daughter?...(Penelope Cruz is beautiful...) . But no, we go back to Will Turner, more specifically his son, who is somehow 20, I haven't sought out a timeline for this series, but I don't think I want to. I think they messed up bad in this one, especially with the reveal at the end (thankfully Bloom is only onscreen for a couple of minutes, and Keira Knightly even less, and has no dialogue  )- that was probably the most reassuring thing. I agree with most that the 4th film was wholly unnecessary, but it did set up a lot of good story points that were all but dropped in this 5th film for some odd reason. Instead we get more convoluted Jack Sparrow backstory, and the villain Capt Salazar had the same gross Teeth-Goo problem Danny DeVito's Penguin did, so he was hard to look at. HUGE PLOT HOLE #1 ---If giving up the Compass sets Salazar free, why did this not occur in any of the previous films when Jack gave up the compass? HUGE PLOT HOLE #2 -At the end it stated that "All Curses on the Sea" are lifted, so -no more curses, no more magic etc...So...How can Davy Jones be back? Even if he came back to life somehow, he would not be cursed...??? Or am I missing something?

what can I say? - This was a franchise that started off so entertaining and humorous. ALL of these big franchises I think are suffering from the law of diminishing returns. It's kind of like Pizza. The first slice is great, the 2nd is even better, by the 3rd you are usually full and ready to stop. Sometimes... if you are super-hungry you may go for a 4th, but you usually regret it later. It's a simple formula, but it works. I think trilogies really are the best way to go about things. If you want to make more films afterwards, give the franchise a break, give the audience time to reflect on how much they like what they had, then maybe come back in 10+ years and see if there is interest. Now it seems they want to give you one every year, until you are so sick of it, you never want to see it again. Then again I cant blame some studios, they see international box office now as their potential, not just the US anymore. But even across the globe they are catching on, it usually just takes an extra film or two. Pirates 5, and Transformers 5, while not being financial failures, both performed way under expectations due to lack of support form international markets. Hopefully this will make studios begin to rethink their strategies and understand that even in other places, eventually they get sick of the same old thing, and want something different.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

I'm thinking that my local theaters will get Shape of Water at the next big expansion date, January 19, but I'm still not sure. I am sure that my flu (or whatever it was) has sufficiently dampened to the point I can actually enjoy watching things so back to my rewatch of Guillermo del Toro's films (and this weekend maybe I work on my stack of Christmas gift Blu-Rays).

Hellboy II: the Golden Army

It's been a while since I've seen this one, so it's great to be delighted by it all over again. There are just so many cool monsters in this movie - I've called it the Star Wars of Monster Movies: tiny monsters to enormous giants and every shape and size in between, monster suit monsters and CGI monsters and and ones crafted by putting actors in makeup and appliances. If only they had a stop motion monster than it would truly be complete! This is a great ensemble movie, too. Characters like Abe and Liz really get to shine after their supporting turns in the previous film, and there's a great lived-in sense to everyone's relationships in this one. You believe that these people live and work together.

Of course, this is where there was the breaking point with Mignola's Hellboy as GDT makes it so much his own. Hellboy II is less folklore and gothic horror and pulp (though elements of all remain) and more domestic (screwball) comedy mixed with a half dozen Harryhausen flicks and all filtered through GDT mind. Hellboy acts even more like GDT commenting on his own eternal adolescence here, further removed from the hard-boiled character of the comics. I don't mind. The comics are brilliant, but I don't think an adaptation has to be super accurate to be good. The first movie is much more comics accurate, but I think the second one is much better.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 - I wanted to like this more, it comes together in the end but the narrative didn't engage me me for the first two acts (unlike Bone Tomahawk). Also I guess it was a stylistic choice but the very cheap looking and simply bad gore effects took me right out of the film each time they happened. The last one is as laughably bad as the Friday the 13th ending with the door - it completely undermines the dramatic elements.
The acting was good, especially Vaughn (from the trailer I expected this was miscast), Udo Kier and Don Johnson. The fights sometimes feel like they are in slow motion and we're supposed to believe Vaughn is Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando levels of strong. Really a mixed bag for me, but ultimately the effects work ruined this by continually breaking the films thrall. I may have really liked it had I seen it on vhs instead of in HD

Baby Driver - I finally got to see this movie last night. I had tried and tried to see it in the theater and it never worked out. Anyway, it didn’t disappoint. It was a thoroughly entertaining and well crafted film. And it was fun to watch a great action film that knows it’s a film and fully embraces the art form, using all the available tools of filmmaking to craft a complete, fun, and engaging audiovisual experience. It’s not just a good script, or fun characters, or a well crafted story; it’s good cinema all around.

That said, it’s not a film I feel a strong need or desire to watch again any time soon. Don’t get me wrong, I’d be perfectly happy to watch it again tonight. But I don’t need to, if that makes any sense. Basically, it was such a complete and satisfying cinematic experience that I feel like I got what I needed out of it and can happily go about my business, humming the soundtrack and tapping my toes as I start a new day.

Although it’s probably a good thing I don’t need to drive anywhere this morning... Houston doesn’t need another bat-out-of-hell on the streets during rush hour.

Logan

I liked it, though I did not really fall in love with it. The X-Men movies aren't exactly my cup of tea. I thought that the first two films (especially the second one) were really solid. Since then, things have been rather uneven with "Days of Future Past" being the best of the later features, imo.

I never saw the two previous "Wolverine" movies, and was told that I really did not need to before watching this one. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and the little girl who played Laura were outstanding. But the story of those seeking refuge, I've seen, many many times before.

Using Leonard Maltin's ratings system, I give this a good *** stars.

The Brawl, Baby Driver and Logan reviews are bummers, guys.

Two of those movies are top 5s of the year for me and the other is top 15.

You guys are killing my soul more than the utterly useless Godzilla anime.
Gills.

How is my Baby Driver review a bummer? I thought the film was great and my review is entirely positive.

Godzilla Planet of the Exposition - Let me put it this way, Godzilla vs Space Godzilla is no longer the worst Godzilla movie ever.

I saw Baby Driver like three times in the theater. It's pure cinema; just what you go to the movies for, much like (ironically, another chase movie) Fury Road.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

lol

I definitely prefer Mothra over Space Godzilla because of Battra and Ifukube's soundtrack. SpaceG has neither of those.

Not that it matters. Planet of the Monsters is worse than either one. I’ve partaken in literal wastes of time that we’re less of a waste of time.

To Live and Die in LA - Great movie despite some narrative flaws. Wonderful camera work and visuals. 9/10

Splatter - This was some short film that appeared on Netflix with Corey Feldman and Tony Todd. It's pretty bad, but it seems like it was intentionally made that way. It could have been worse as I'm more stunned and its stupidity than angered, so I will give it a 5/10.

The Simpsons Movie - After rewatching the 9 seasons of the show, this movie makes for a grand finale. Yes, it does have some of the stupid ass moments that plagued Seasons 8 and 9, but ultimately, this movie is just fantastic. It has some really nice spoofs, it has the real Homer (despite a couple of jerkass moments), it has touching moments, excellent voice acting, great jokes, and ends the series with a bang. Oh, and the animation is really nice, especially during Homer's epiphany scene. It's not perfect, but it is <tapping hands together> excellent. A 9/10.

Watched Mothra vs. Godzilla on Svengoolie. Looking at the quality of the print made me anticipate the eventual Criterion release that much more.

Saw Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Great performances from McDormand, Harrelson, and Rockwell. Even though it's the same writer/director as In Bruges it's much less stylized, more naturalistic, and even though it's been labeled a black comedy I think that's pretty misleading. It is steadfastly a drama.

I went into this already knowing about the backlash in some quarters - not really a hardcore backlash, just the movie rubbing some people the wrong way, and after seeing the movie I understand why.
