Godzilla 1995 Unused Concepts

Postby klen7 » Sat Dec 16, 2017 4:16 pm

The latest Hobby Japan book dedicated to Godzilla vs Destoroyah had a nice section on unused concepts. The book is fantastic and covers a lot of new material that isnt in the Shogakukan "Godzilla vs Destoroyah Ultimate Collection" or the "Godzilla Heisei Perfection" or "Godzilla Chronicles" books.

There is a lot about Godzilla vs Barbaroi, but since thats been covered pretty well here are a few that I was less familiar with it.

Heisei Era Oxygen Destroyer and carrying case - a few of the scenarios ended with Godzilla dying to the oxygen destroyer again

“Godzilla vs. Biomonster” - This pitch featured a “bio-monster” designed as a modern Frankenstein. Skin is a modified version of G cells.

Image
“Godzilla vs. Deep Sea Life” - This concept featured a monster from the deep fighting Godzilla and apparently resulted in G Force using the Oxygen Destroyer to destroy both monsters

There was a plan to have Gotendai (Super X 3) connect a bunch of balloons to Godzilla to keep him from hiding in the water in an idea similar to “Raising the Titanic”. The balloons would take him up to the stratosphere then drop him. A similar climax played out in Gamera Guardian of the Universe the same year. Coincidentally the three drill design also appeared in the animated Battleship Yamato OVA also released in 1995

And of course there's a couple more Godzilla vs Godzilla style concepts - One is an interesting turn on Godzilla vs Ghidorah's premise with Godzilla fighting another super-mutated Godzillasaurus, and another had Godzilla facing off against none other than Godzilla Jr, which could have been really interesting concept if they had worked up to that through the heisei series instead of tacking it on at the end

That’s awesome. I was wondering if anyone here would get it. I need to start getting these “completion” books. This and the biollante one both sound fantastic.

Also, do you read japanese?

I don't. The Completion/Perfection books have a lot more text than the Shogakukan books, but they all have enough photos to be worth it for me.

I use Google translate app which has gotten a lot better in recent months. Just take a picture of a caption or text block and highlight the bit you want translated. I have seen notable improvement in the past year and it was already very helpful

This is amazing stuff! I'm surprised no other Godzilla movie has decided to bring back the oxygen destroyer. Seems like an obvious thing to do, even Destoroyah doesn't really do much with it besides provides provide Destoroyah with its name and vaguely its powers.

I know they wanted to do something special because it was the finale, but what I had never heard before (and I read this in Kalat's book earlier this year) was that when Gamera: Guardian of the Universe came out early in 1995 the Godzilla team threw out what they had been working on and set to work on making the movie more spectacular because because they didn't want Gamera to show them up!

The idea of essentially making the Super X 3 the Gotengo is crazy.

Was just reading a book about how one of the concept ideas for a "final" Godzilla movie was Godzilla vs. MechaniKong, with MechaniKong injecting people into Godzilla a la Fantastic Voyage.

I don't know if there's any concept art of that floating around out there, but the idea of a Fantastic Voyage inside Godzilla is a super bizarre concept I'd be curious to see revisited.
Gills.

^ Have you seen the "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been" episode of Sony's Godzilla: The Series? Nick and Monique totally do that!

It's an awesome episode, although I remember Keith Aiken mentioned on the old Tokyo Monsters board that the whole crew thought it was a terrible script.
