Let's fix the Heisei Series.

Discuss the 2nd Godzilla film era here! Beam fights, revised versions of classic kaiju, the Heisei era was a mixed bag of fun and controversy!

Back in the day when VHS still dominated the home video format, Destroy All Monsters had some previews that played before the movie and one of them was for that particular movie you've mentioned. After seeing said preview, I don't think it's something I'm in a rush to see anytime soon.

Gunhed certainly makes the other Heisei era films seem fairly good. Though the effects work seem miles above the 90's films and that's depressing. It's a shame that effort couldn't have been applied elsewhere.

One hundred bazillion times better than what we got.

I was skimming the thread because I wasn't aware of negative opinions about the heisei movies, let alone at the level this thread seems to indicate, but here I have to agree. GvsSG is the worst thing ever. I can't stand that movie.

One idea to improve it would be to just replace it with Barbaroi or Bagan or something. That's my suggestion. As for the other heisei joints, just add in the cool ideas they left on the cutting room floor. Like the scene from GvsMG2 where a Godzillasaurus was going to fight "White Rodan" or w/e. Have Future Ghidorah's beams be a different color for each head. Mechamothra. You know, cool stuff like that.

The only thing we look at more negatively than certain Heisei films round these parts is Bagan.

My Heisei Godzilla head-canon simply removes Mothra, SpaceGodzilla and maybe Destoroyah from the timeline. It streamlines the series a little and the remaining movies still make sense. They tried to play with continuity but they never planned anything in advance so it feels very dragged out.

Not really seeing how any of that stuff would actually improve these films.

The Heisei series should have toned it down or cranked it up. Looking at the concept art for these movies you can tell they wanted these movies to be very epic, over-the-top, crazy Sci-Fi. Obviously Toho does not have the resources to bring those ideas to life in a convincing way, so they had to pair the stories, sets, designs, effects, etc., down to meet their budget requirements. Throw in some 'focus group' film making and you have a nice bowl of luke warm mediocrity.

These films could have totally worked in a medium where their vision could have been realized, using them as a template for an Akira/Gundam/Evangellion style anime would have been radical.
