Talkback #22: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

Regarding the monster's name, we should take into account that in Katakana, they opted for a different spelling than was used for the word in the phrase "Oxygen Destroyer." I think Toho's intent was always that he should have a monster-style name based upon the word "Destroyer."

Another recent random re-watch. This movie's even lazier than I've previously chastised it for being. Characters outright just say the things that are happening that we could see with our own eyes:
"Godzilla's glowing"
'Destoroyah has a new form.'
"Destoroyah is big now"
'Godzilla blasted us with his heat ray.'
"Godzilla's temperature is 1100 degrees"
'The water is dissolving the fish'
and on and on. If it's happening on screen you can bet somebody will state it, just in case you're blind, I guess.

And all the nonsense where they basically KNOW everything that's going on inside Godzilla's body, his temperature, the temperature at which he'll meltdown, the precise amount of fission taking place inside of him...that's just ridiculous.

Oh yeah, and in addition to its Aliens ripoff...that scene becomes a The Thing ripoff at the end. Seriously, just watch it...Destoroyah, in flames, dripping onto the ground, the pieces are slightly moving, the music is straight out of The Thing.

That's something that really irks me about stuff like the Aliens homages here and the Terminator stuff in vs. King Ghidorah. It's one thing to have something pointless and awful (Indiana Jones stuff in vs. Mothra), but it feels like the plot is being twisted and turned for one purpose, and that's to include those homages. Maybe that's just my negativity coloring it, but that's how I tend to see things like M-11. HE'S A ROBIT, WHY?, SO HE CAN BE IN A SPLOSION AND LOOK ALL TERMINATOR-Y. DESTROYAH SPLITS INTO MULTIPLE CREATURES, WHY? SO WE CAN HAVE A POORLY DONE ALIENS HOMAGE.

Fully agreed. But yeah I hate these movies too so maybe I'm wrong

I flip-flop on this one a lot. I've definitely warmed up to the fact that the monster fight scene in this film has so much melodrama attached to it. It's goofy, but it keeps me emotionally engaged, even if its just as silly as "THAT MONSTER KILLED GODZILLA'S SON".

I also like the military police engagement with the little Destroyahs for whatever reason.

Let's just take a quick moment to appreciate that the movie that scene is from cost $3,000,000 more than Gamera 3.

One thing about Junior I never understood was the awkward size change from SpaceGodzilla.

The only good miniatures in these shots are the airplanes. The terminal and control tower are terribly lit and legitimately look like 'cardboard' to me.

The terminal and control tower look particularly nice to me. Sure, some lower angles would've been beneficial, but I don't see anything wrong with the miniatures here and I'm typically not that impressed with post-91 miniatures. The gif kind of backfired and gave me new appreciation for it.
