Kain's interview is spot on for me. SG is just so boring, and I loathed the entire Project T subplot that went nowhere (as with the "magic bullet" plotline). I'm pretty sure the first time I watched this film I almost thought about napping. Even the main battle is sleep inducing, and the score, while not bad by any means, just seems off to me and makes me want to nap.

I just watched GvSG again over the weekend -- it's a movie I wish was better than it turned out to be.

As Jellydonut25 just posted, unlike some other Heisei entries, GvSG isn't made up of elements of other movies (GvM has already been noted, and I always think of the Terminator movies when watching GvKG). But on the other hand, watching GvSG sometimes seems like Toho reached way down deep into their idea barrel, grabbed a few handfuls, and threw them on the wall to see what stuck.

There's lots going on that and some ideas get forgotten as the story moves along, some don't really go anywhere, and others pop-up out of nowhere and then run off never to be seen again. The "magic bullet" is actually a pretty interesting idea, a special bullet filled with blood coagulant. Think of it, a bullet designed to give Godzilla a heart attack, that's the makings of a major plot thread all on its own. SpaceGodzilla seems like he's missing some back story, specifically some sort of alien menace (a la the Showa films) involved in his creation. It's really rather random that SpaceGodzilla is created and then immediately decides to traverse the void of space to land here on Earth and take out Godzilla.

Of the Heisei mechas I like Moguera better than MechaGodzilla. Moguera's design is more interesting visually than MechaGodzilla's although both suffer from a distinct lack of movement when battling Godzilla which is a bit disappointing.

I agree that this movie is a lot of missed opportunity. I actually kind of liked the psychic stuff when I was younger because it actually felt like Miki was developing into a character who could do more than feel Godzilla and look sadly into the camera.

I mean how bad ass would it have been if the Heisei series had gone all-out into a live-action Akira/Godzilla crossover film?

Aside from Godzilla vs. Biollante, Miki feels Godzilla in the same way that Amanda Seyfreid's character in Mean Girls predicts the rain.

I'm a little saddened to have made that reference, but the gist is that Miki's always like, "Godzilla!" cut to shot of Godzilla already in mid-destruction.
It's like, "Hey....thanks...I guess. Maybe a little heads-up next time?"

The effects in this movie are awful but I actually really love the glowing crystals growing all over the Fukuoka set. Filmed at more interesting angles by someone other than Kawakita, they could make for some truly inspired sequences. But no.

You could always count on Kawakita to give you a clear concept of what that set actually looked like. He wasn't trying to pull the wool over the audience's eyes, like so many other, deceitful, spfx directors. He wasn't gonna try to trick us into thinking those were actually giant crystals in a real city; he didn't take us for suckers like that.

Here's how I feel Shogo Tomiyama produces Godzilla films:

1. Lets do something to re-capture the spark of the original films. We need to bring back characters everyone likes!
2. Hmm, ticket sales are going down, and people are complaining that the series is getting boring.
3. Lets do something totally original!
4. Wow that was "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!".
5. Repeat to step 1.
