Ripping avatar, Mr. Ballard!
MG2003 has got the nub of the gist. KPA has a good point about Sony's releases of Toho movies, but gosh, those Tristar Heisei dubs! They weren't even bad in a funny or charming way, like the old days, they were just plain bad. It's like listening to actors who didn't so much as make it into soaps, and even less convincing. I know a lot of people actually enjoy the dub for G2K, but I can't do it--I change it to French. Hint: I don't know any French! Dubbing really seems to be a dead art. That's the only reason I haven't bothered to replace my Heisei tapes; I don't see shelling out $30 for the DVD when half the time I'm going to wish I could shut the beastly sound off. I'd be interested to know if Tristar's DVDs are any better about providing credits and allowing the ending theme music to finish than their tapes were.
So yes, Sony has gotten the films out, but honestly, some of the criticism, while perhaps a bit overheated, is justified to an extent. One could really wish it might have been been left to HBO; in their one effort (GvBiollante89) they got SP, widescreen, full credits, a classier cassette sleeve and a dub that was--well, not much, but somewhat better than what came later--all at one go, first crack out of the box.
PS my (yes, Sony/Tristar) tape of GvSG is in SP. I think at least one other is also (no, I'm not counting the HBO Biollante) but I forget which one. Destoroyah is in bloody EP (yeesh!).
