Remakes suck, I know, but remodeling an old classic so that new audiences could appreciate it for what it really is, is something else.
Gojira was a period piece-war film that warned us of the dangers of using nuclear weapons and the hell humanity'd go through for it.
It stands as a movie that teaches and at the same time, entertains and amazes.
For its' time, Gojira was a horror film, and a new one should be treated as that, but with more respect and maturity than horror films at present, but with war overtones.
Now, you could remake Zilla 98, but again, what would that prove? That we know it was a mistake and we really want to make up for it by covering it up like nothing's happened and redo it?
Zilla had ,and still has, potential as a monster - only that they(Centropolis) felt they needed to show that he was vulnerable, unlike japan's monster. If he were portrayed like Godzilla, I bet we would'nt be talking about it like we do today, and would consider him just another kaiju. It might've been a bettere movie as well, even with the annoying cast members.
Remodel Gojira for present-day audiences and make new godzilla fans that might want to look into the source material, and join the kaiju-movie fandom badwagon we're all on today.
Cast good actors from both countries and have the screenwriter watch the original and read up on WWII, Hiroshima, and Atomic Bomb testing during that decade. Base the story on the creature itself and, in a risky move, make him JUST LIKE his japanese counterpart. Use CG when necessary and rigs for human interaction. Make Godzilla a beast. Not just any beast, a smart, tactical monster who portrays the pure evil that war is and exemplifies fear and power.
I believe that, if Sony and Toho could come to terms, co-produce, release, write, and release, we could probably have the definitive Godzilla movie, and quite possibily a true testament of what Godzilla is.
