I can already hear someone yelling "Blasphemy!"
Anyways, the original Godzilla is considered by many to be one of the best science fiction films of all time. The American version, while not carrying as strong a message as the original, is still notable for being such a success in the United States. Probably the most noticable aspect of "King of the Monsters" is the inclusion of Raymond Burr's character "Steve Martin", an American reporter and college friend of Dr. Serizawa. Burr was carefully inserted into the film, ultimately to the point where those who don't know he WASN'T in the original film are shocked. His character is so believably placed that, watching the original version, you can easily imagine him to be participating in these events, even though he is never seen on screen.
Okay, so what is my point? While thinking about these things, I wondered what the result would be if I took Burr's scenes from the American version and edited them into the original version. I'm sounding redundant aren't I? "Wouldn't the result just be the American version...?" The answer is no. My plan is to insert Burr without detracting from the original film at all, meaning that I plan to trim some of the American scenes (especially those that contradict what is happening in the Japanese footage).
I'm sure somebody out there is wondering where I got an idea like this from. Well, you see, this is somewhat based on what I would like to see in a remake of the original Godzilla. I would like to see a movie that follows the original version faithfully, but also includes the Steve Martin character (as well as some state-of-the-art SPFX
). This idea of editing Burr into the original film evolved from that.
So, any comments? Is this a ridiculous idea or am I on to something? I plan to use a subtitled VHS of Godzilla (I'm not entirely sure where its from...) and a DVD copy of G, KOTM (the Simitar DVD).
