Let me just throw my two cents in here. There is no doubt in my mind that Kong won. It's just logical. Kong was made out to be the hero. That's blatantly obvious. As KPA said, he is a goofy but loveable character all through the movie.
So why did Kong win? Let me elaborate on one of KPA's possiblities. I think a good interpretation would be to take into account the glow that we see emanating from beneath the water's surface after the monsters fall in. Think: Kong was charged with electricity. Water conducts electricity. Therefore, Kong could have won by continuing his hold on Godzilla and taking him out with a gigantic burst of electricity brought about by the presence of water--lots and lots of water. Makes sense, doesn't it?
It's no secret that I like Godzilla more than Kong. Godzilla is my favorite monster, but I can accept him losing every now and then. It doesn't hurt that KKvsG is one of my favorite kaiju movies because of its sense of humor. That makes it almost as much of a comedy as a monster movie. So there you have it. Not a very serious movie, so people shouldn't strain themselves trying to think of an explanation that contradicts what the filmmakers intended
and what we see on screen.
So
there.
