I think he's talking about the cinematographer. I think what he REALLY had a good knack for was filming really wide sfx shots. he managed to cram so many things into one shot, and looked frantic but never messy.

Mothra was the best example of all this.

Probably since I just realized I was thinking of Hiroshi Koizumi.
