I concluded after my last viewing of Ghidorah that the movie isn't really in continuity with Rodan at all, but instead is taking a VERY broad strokes take of the movie as it's backstory. lhb412's is right in bringing up Universal and Hammer, because that's exactly what I'm thinking of. Specifically, look at something like Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man or House of Frankenstein as earlier examples of this: the former makes really vague references to Ghost of Frankenstein but messes up some key details, while the latter makes vague references to the former AND Dracula while getting those details even more wrong.
About the only thing Ghidorah says is that a monster called Rodan, which previously had appeared at Mt. Aso, once existed. It's the same thing with Godzilla in Mothra vs. Godzilla, but with even less connection to the previous films. Really, all continuity in the '60s (at least up until SoG and DAM) centered around Mothra and Ghidorah, not Godzilla or Rodan.
