After watching Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla earlier in the weekend, I also decided to revisit Terror of Mechagodzilla. This is another late Showa era film with a lot to offer--mostly in terms of monster action, imho--but, as a whole film I don't think it compares as well to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
The plot is classic sci-fi (spurned mad scientist PLUS alien invasion), but because the previous film featured the same aliens, and their same "cyborg", as well as Interpol agents, much of this movie's plot simply felt like rehashed G vs MG. I think both the alien plot, and the Interpol/espoinage sub plot, were better executed in the first film. G vs. MG offered more interesting monster battles too, in my opinion (especially Godzilla vs. "Godzilla" at the refinery, and King Caesar's initial solo battle with Mechagodzilla).
Nevertheless, Terror of Mechagodzilla offers us a final battle featuring Godzilla at his most physical since, probably Godzilla Raids Again. Big G gets in close for tooth & claw brawling, headbutts, throws, and holds. Godzilla's fight with Titanosaurus is a lot of fun to watch, perhaps in part because, for all of Godzilla's monsterous opponents, he doesn't really have any other opponent that is like him, another biped "dinosaur". The battle also features a fair amount of energetic charging and jumping, which seems to me as somewhat uncommon in the other Showa era films. One other thing I enjoyed about the final battle was that Godzilla's heat ray really seemed to be displayed as a powerful weapon. It wasn't just shrugged off by his enemies. Here Titanosaurus reels and Mechagodzilla's frame bursts into explosions. All make for an exciting battle!
Another exciting entry in the Godzilla canon! I'm looking forward to becoming reacquainted with some of the other Showa films over the holidays as well
