I really enjoy Manabe's score for HEDORAH. I think he captures the strange nature of Hedorah really well. Don't like the MEGALON score as much, but it's not bad as most people claim.

Gave this one a watch earlier, since I just got the MB disc. I, too, have mixed feelings about it. While it's pretty fun (and funny), it isn't quite as thrilling as, say, Sea Monster or Gigan. I get that this was a really low-budget production, but it doesn't feel especially ambitious either, and that kind of hurts it for me. It probably says something that Jet Jaguar has more character development than any of the humans. At least the wacky shenanigans keep me from being bored (the car chase down stone stairs, the tail slide, the Jet Jaguar song, the unnecessarily bloody hit to the face with a model plane, etc). The soundtrack is so-so for me: I like that it's experimental, but it isn't as gloriously cheesy as the Hedorah soundtrack. Overall, not one of my favorite movies, but it'd be great to watch with a bunch of friends.

I watched my DVD of this while grading papers tonight. I love this film. For all of its flaws, its still less of a chore to get through than the 91-95 Heisei films, and it doesn't grate on my brain like Megaguirus or bore me to near death like Godzilla vs. Mothra.

And Megalon and Gigan are hilarious.

I've always loved this movie. But over the last few years I've appreciated it a little more. Just from things I've read, then noticed while watching the movie, I've come to view this as not really a sloppy movie but kind of a "the best that could come from what we had to work with" kind of thing. While watching, it just feels to me like they had the bare minimum to work with, and they tried hard to make it work. Sure, there are things that seem generally sloppy, but as for the rest of it I think it's okay.
