To me, Ghidrah The Three-Headed Monster, like the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla represents Toho at the absolute peak of it's prominence. It's a movie of wildly epic scope and first-class cinematography; it's simply the most beautiful-looking Godzilla movie ever made. It's also the kind of movie that acknowledges the fact that Godzilla and friends are not just plot devices in a story, they are all genuine movie stars. in KKvsG, it was apparent that Toho was in on the joke, and incorporated alot of humor into the monster scenes, as well as the human drama, to exceptional effect. In Ghidrah, they went back to that formula of solid sci-fi story-telling with a bit of a twinkle in the eye. Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra talking, with the Peanut sisters translating is meant to be fun, and it sets up the perfect emotional jolt when Godzilla and Rodan decide to join forces with Mothra to combat a much greater evil. It's Honda's primary theme of international cooperation, kaiju-style. He may not have been completely simpatico with Tanaka and Tsuburaya's intent to play to the audience, but he still manages to make a solid visual interpretation of Shinichi Sekizawa's imaginative script. All of the main players here contribute adequate work, and while the film may not have the same fundamental tidiness of Godzilla vs. The Thing or Monster Zero, it more than compenates in sheer entertainment value and whimsical imagination. It also has an excellent dual-ensemble of human players and THE ultimate cast of Toho creatures. Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah are simply the best creations in Toho's entire kaiju-canon, atleast in my summation. San Daikaiju Chikyu Sandai No Kessen is, along with the likes of Kingu Kongu tai Gojira, Frankenstein tai Chitei Kaiju Baragon, Frankenstein no Kaiju: Sanda tai Gaira and Kingu Kongu no Gyakushu the pendultimate example of what makes these movies so special: they're just too damn-fun!
