I liked this one as a kid, then as the years went on I fell in with the group of fans who love to slam it, call it a piece of crap, whatever...but in the past couple of years or so, especially with Classic Media's DVD release, I've come to enjoy and appreciate it a whole lot more. I'm still not a big fan of the extensive use of stock footage, but it's forgivable, I suppose. I like the idea of its being set in the real world with a nerdy kid who loves Godzilla escaping into his dreams--it reminds me of myself at that age. The characters, especially the toy consultant and bank robbers, are terrific, the music is great, and the fights between Godzilla and Gabara are, for my money, some of the best in the series.
That being said, while the messages Honda gives in his movies usually resonate with me, I can't say I agree with the ending moral for this one. He overcomes the head bully, then usurps the kid's position? :naughty: It seems very un-Honda to me. But whatever. A very fun movie, all in all, and certainly underrated.
