GODZILLA VS. GIGAN is the second Godzilla movie that I had ever seen. And it came around at a time when I thought there weren't any more Godzilla movies (the first one I saw was GODZILLA 1985). So, it has an enormous amount of sentimental value to me. Lots of warm memories. My favorite scene is when Godzilla gets back up, after being revived by the energy of the Godzilla Tower, pounds his chest ("GODZILLA'S STRONG AGAIN!") and knocks the crap out of Gigan with his tail! That part gets me every time.
As far as the issue of stock footage is concerned, yes it does contain more than any other Godzilla movie. It barrows entire scenes from different movies (GODZILLA'S REVENGE does this too, but atleast it's all a dream), and uses tons of day-for-night shots. With the exception of MEGALON, GODZILLA VS. GIGAN is probably the cheapest of all of the Godzilla movies. And the stock-Ifukube tracks, well, if I had to name the number one thing that I love about these movies, it's the music. A lot of times, the Akira Ifukube (or Masaru Sato) scores make the movie for me. Here, it fits the film just fine.
Part of me does wish that GODZILLA VS. GIGAN had more new scenes, and less stock footage (the oil refinery sequence only hints at what Nakano could do). I think that it would get alot more credit from fans than it does now. Still, I love it the way it is, so I'm not exactly losing sleep over it either.
