I'm currently watching my DVD of Terror of MechaGodzilla. Unfortunately it's the horrid Scimitar DVD which, despite boasting of being a new transfer on the back of the case, looks like absolute crap. The dubbing is also pretty bad, and it appears to be an edited version of the film to boot.
*SIGH*
Still.. with all these problems (yes, even with the evil "Snidely Whiplash" voice that they dubbed over the constantly cackling mad scientist), I can still see that they were really trying to take the series back to a slightly more serious approach. It's somewhere between Godzilla vs. Mothra and King Kong vs. Godzilla in it's mood.
Does this make it the best 70's movie? I don't know, I'll reserve judgement until I see them all uncut and subtitled.
One thing I will say is this: Terror of MechaGodzilla has possibly the best Godzilla entrance ever. A masterpiece of lighting and cinematography that is probably the most intimidating that Godzilla's been since the first film.
Not even the craptastic quality of the Scimitar DVD could ruin that moment.
P.S. Since this is a 70's Godzilla thread, I feel it is my sacred duty to mention that Gigan rules. Because he does. Rule that is.
BEWARE THE CYBER-CHICKEN!
