"SCREW THE JAPANESE VERSION!!! RAYMOND BURR KICKS A**!!!"
(Disregard the first half of that statement. It was designed to piss people off, even though I consider both versions to be classics. My personal preference is Godzilla King of the Monsters!, however.)

Both versions of the movie are equally good and each tell the same story but from a different perspective. The original Godzilla movie is one of Japan's masterpieces of Japanese cinema (note that does not mean best Japanese film ever) and the American version is a great 1950s Sci-Fi classic. It doesn't make sense at first but just keep reading into it....

GKOTM was the first dinosaur / monster movie I saw at the age 5. I think it was handled with class and still holds up well today.
I still find myself chuckling at certain parts when it's obvious they are talking about Godzilla and they haven't even determined what has been causing the shipping disasters and Raymond Burr is given a completely wrong translation.

Listen to the commentary again. The project started out as being a Japanese influenced Beast, and it shares a lot with the Beast, but over the course of production it transformed into a political commentary film. You are getting the finished project mixed up with the very very VERY early plans for the film, which are completley different. All the things that Ed and Steve point out as being symbolic are in fact symbolic.
