Kong: Skull Island (2017)

^ Vogt-Roberts was really smart to give Reilly room to improvise with his character, since he ends up being the heart and soul of the movie, and it never feels too over-the-top because he's a guy who's spent almost 30 years in this totally insane environment.


PS - I hope Godzilla comes ashore on Skull Island in Godzilla vs. Kong mostly because I want to see stick bug again.

Kong: Skull Island had another solid hold in weekend three, with an estimated $14,425,000 haul for a -48.2% drop from last weekend. That's impressive considering the direct competition from Power Rangers, which debuted to an estimated $40.5m, and with Beauty and the Beast still being such a massive draw. Skull Island has now topped $133m in North America.

It also debuted to a tremendous $71m in China this weekend. For reference, Godzilla made $77m total in China three years ago from a $37m opening weekend. Even if Kong fades just as quickly, it would still end up close to $150m in China, and anything resembling legs will only take it higher. It also opened to an estimated $3.4m in Japan, and with more than $258m internationally, it's now sitting at over $392m worldwide. It's doing really well. $500m worldwide is totally within reach.

Glad it's doing well. On my end I can say that I went to my fav theater to watch it and 15 minutes before showtime it was sold out so I drove all the way across town to my second favorite theater with a larger seating capacity to see it.



I enjoyed it even more the second time. First viewing on something like this if you're in the fanbase has a lot of expectations and such behind it so a second viewing is just more relaxed and fun. Kong is such a great character, here. Even though he plays a much different role in this one he still feels the closest to the '33 Kong. Not an ape: a movie monster!

I just saw this in a PACKED theater this past weekend in Ota, Gunma Prefecture. One of the largest screens in that particular multiplex, in 3D, and dubbed in Japanese. Seems to be doing well! They also have a subtitled 2D version that only plays twice a day.

I can't add much more than what has already been written about it, but I and my 7-year-old son loved it! Sadly, about 2/3 of the audience cleared about before the after-credits scene...

I will probably see this again next weekend. Always love to see the little things I missed the first time around.

I have told any friends and relatives that if are going to see this, that they should wait until the closing credits are over, and they will be treated with something extra. My sister (who notoriously hated monster movies), went with a friend of hers, and she told me they felt like fools staying until the very end, as everyone else had left. But their patience was rewarded and to her surprise, she did not even know Godzilla was in this universe! In the end, she enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Slowly, I am converting all family members into monster lovers!

One thing that struck me when watching K:SI is that it carries over the "Let them fight" theme from G'14. I wonder if the "let them fight" theme will carry over into the other Monsterverse movies? (it'd be a good overarching theme or sub-theme for all the movies) I thought "let them fight" was a great theme for the Godzilla 2014 and it works equally well for K:SI.

Seen the movie twice now and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time. REALLY enjoyed the characters in this, very engaging. One question that's nagging me though...and since I'm stupid and don't know how to use the spoiler tags, I'll make this as vague as possible...where did all of the helicopters come from?

Sam jackson's unit was a helicopter cavalry unit. They brought them with them. They're clearly seen on the deck of the ship on the way to the island. I'm pretty sure there was even a scene of them being loaded onboard.

I've only seen the film once, but am headed out to see it again this aftenoon

Just got back from my second viewing. It totally holds up! It's a solid all out monster flick in the classic Toho fashion! I'd rank it up there with pacific rim (I.e. At the top of the list) when it comes to this recent slate of American monster movies.

You're right, I noticed this time there seem to be more helicopters in the air than there were on deck. I chock it up to movie magic I guess.

But there weren't any extra types. The Hueys are all mid deck, the chinook is up on the bow, and the sea stallion is on a pad at the very back of the ship behind the bridge. (I might have the chinook and sea stallion locations backwards, but I think that's right). It's only the Hueys that seem to miraculously multiply.

If the ship had been modified to be more like a carrier, there could have been a elevator that allowed for additional Hueys to be stored below the main deck.

Not only did Kong: Skull Island ease an estimated -40% to $8.8m in its fourth weekend of domestic play, it's now sitting at a whopping $477m worldwide. It's made over $147m in North America, $124m in China, and over $200m everywhere else so far. It's already eclipsed Godzilla's $328.4m international haul thanks to that smashing performance in China, where Godzilla topped out at $77m. Kong should have no problem climbing past $500m now and it might be able to top Godzilla's $529m worldwide total even if it ends up about $20m-$35m lower in North America. It's a hit, folks!
