Godzilla: KOTM Easter Eggs & REferences

How many Easter Eggs and references to other G films did you catch? Here's what I caught:

-- Protester outside the White House TV clip carrying a poster saying "Destroy All Monsters."
-- The Osprey that descended down a small tunnel on the oil platform, just like the helicopter that did the same thing in the early part of "Destroy All Monsters" on Monster Land.
-- When Maddie first sees the frozen King Ghidorah, "Monster Zero."
-- The Oxygen Destroyer. I laughed out loud.
-- The young Japanese scientist (Dr. Lin?) was a dead ringer for Megumi Odaka. And she had a twin sister (played by herself) like the Fairies of Infant Island.
-- Dr. Serizawa sacrificing himself with the nuke to bring Godzilla back to life (opposite of Gojira 1954)
-- "Burning Godzilla" makes an appearance, ala "Godzilla vs Destroyah"
-- Reference to "Godzilla vs King Ghidorah" as the nuke makes Godzilla "super-charged."
-- The after-scene is a shot for shot reproduction of the opening scene of "Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla" (1994)

Though not as on-the-nose as the Godzilla series references, I felt there was some heisei Gamera influence too. The whole plot of a bereavement leading someone to control a monster was very reminiscent of Revenge of Iris. And the way Ghidorah meteor-drops Godzilla was a lot like the atmospheric re-entry piledriver in Guardian of the Universe.

The Monarch base Rodan erupted from was 56 which was the same year Rodan came out.

And, of course, Rodan emerging from a volcano reflects the rodans being buried in lava at the end of the 1956 movie, or the surviving one appearing at Mt. Aso in Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster.

Some others

Mothra's sacrifice mirrors GMK and it also mirrors Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II.
Ghidorah losing a head.
luring and controlling the monsters with a sound a la 85...or even like Gigan
Monsters conversing...a lot like GTTHM.
An underwater continent a la Mu or Seatopia
A giant egg is discovered in the credits...a second Mothra? or baby Godzilla?
The credits talk about a giant greek squid or something (it goes by kinda fast) but...Giant Pacific Octopus? Gezora? reference
The credits also talk about a desert becoming a vast greenery...slight tip of the cap to Biollante?
LoneWolfandCub wrote:-- The young Japanese scientist
She's Chinese and definitely a very "make the movie more appealing to China" part of the movie. They kill off Sally Hawkins to replace her with a character who's essentially the exact same character but...Chinese....so China will care more and go see it more.

Oh and all the outposts are like...quite calculated references.
The Monster Zero outpost is 32. It's a slight tip of the cap to The Thing, actually, as that takes place at outpost 31.
Mothra is at outpost 61.

She's also twins: the one on the Goteng... uh, whatever the ship is called and the one who witnesses the Mothra cocoon emergence. Part of subsequent generations of twins in a family who've worked for Monarch and apparently this continuity's version of the Shobijin.

Which is why Zhang Ziyi should star in a Mothra solo film!

Man, y’all pretty much covered them all. An ode to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah ‘91 as Godzilla takes off one of Ghidorah’s heads.

As was already mentioned on another thread (I think it was Benjamin), someone in the cast was named "Harryhausen".

Fenway Park gets destroyed mirroring that of the baseball stadium getting the same treatment in "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II". The Red Sox should be heavily promoting this movie, such as putting a Godzilla image on their Green Monster!

This could be more me than an actual reference, but during the attack on Rodan, a pilot is forced to eject and on his way down, is eaten by R. Very reminiscent (I thought) of a similar scene in "The Giant Claw".

Hey. Can we like...kinda sorta talk about this for a second?

I get that it was just a jokey joke moment but like...the implication here from this dumb throwaway joke is that when the team comes across the sub in the jungle, it's covered not in saliva, but in semen....right? Like, Godzilla 2014 now features prominent kaiju penises, vaginas, semen, and Godzilla sexually assaulting a creature to death....

...right? (tongue in cheek...but also... right?)

Did anyone else notice how the first encounter between Godzilla and Ghidorah in Antarctica was full of visual callbacks to G'14?

The Monarch crew watches Ghidorah's tails and necks rise up out of the ice crevice from the same angle that the crew in Janjira watched the male MUTO stick its front legs up to pull down the cables.

When Ghidorah crawls out of the ice crevice, the camera frenetically moves around the fleeing people as they're trampled randomly, just like when the male MUTO climbs out of the pit in Janjira.

Godzilla stands up after emerging from the ice and the camera pans up his body from the same angle as when he arrived at the airport in Honolulu.

Godzilla's first blast of atomic breath plays out just as when he first used it in G'14. The blue glow starts in his tail's dorsal fins and illuminates the nearby people as it spreads up to the fins on his back.

The scene even ends with a shot from Mark's POV looking up as Ghidorah spreads his wings and takes off into the sky. It's the same angle as when Ford watches the male MUTO take off from Janjira at the very end of that sequence.

^ I only noticed the callback to the pan-up reveal of Godzilla at the airport from '14!

When I saw that, I didn't think of Mu or Seatopia, but for me, it closely reminded me of the scenes from "Mysterious Island", when our protagonists discover that submerged ancient city, (was it Atlantis?) and of course, subsequently gets destroyed by the volcano.

It’s fleeting, but during the buildup just prior to Ghidorah landing at Fenway Park you can clearly hear his classic flying sound effect.

I did not notice that. I'll have to unclog my ears next time.

I did hear what sounded like one of Ghidorah's exact 1991 sound bytes during this shot from the Boston battle:

Pretty sure that during an early scene of the people protesting the government I saw someone carrying a placard that said "Destroy All Monsters".
