Maybe... and this is a BIG maybe... give audiences a 'villain' Godzilla in this upcoming film. As many here have stated, one of the big draws to this character was watching him smash cities and seeing throngs of terrified people fleeing in all directions. It's one of the classic tropes that is in almost every one of his movies. But woefully missing in the Legendary flicks. Have Charlie Dance's character somehow gain control of Godzilla and 'turn him' to the Dark Side for half the flick. We get to see the Big G smash and destroy and simultaneously get a valid reason for Kong to come and put the smackdown on him... and then (thanks to Monarch intervention) the control is eliminated or destroyed amidst some larger looming threat and the two giants are forced to cooperate in order to vanquish... whatever it is. Not a perfect plot, but it would be a solid way to shoehorn in the evil Godzilla aspect so sadly lacking in the Legendary version thus far.

Bummer about the MASER cannon not being used. I guess you could say the filmmakers had a Chekov's MASER cannon.

...it was a flop.

In addition to just outright not making that much money (it's currently 14th on the charts for the year and will probably finish around 20), it was a sizable DOMESTIC flop, coming in at 17th on the year for domestic box office, and garnering a much bigger chunk of its box office from overseas than most of the movies above it. Only Hobbs & Shaw and Alita (and technically that one Chinese movie...but THEN AGAIN...TECHNICALLY all of that movie's profits are domestic...)

It flopped, it was a disappointment, and Legendary/WB's hesitation in doing anything thus far to promote Godzilla vs Kong shows that they're pretty much ready to just throw it out there and cut their losses.

R.I.P Monsterverse.

However I didn't like KoTM so... don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Unless Kong vs. Godzilla on name alone can pull off a Hail Mary, the US franchise is done.
