Ghidrah The Three Headed-Monster really doesn't hold up.

I just finished rewatching it an hour or two ago. I don't mind the human parts. It sorta works in how it blends the 2 plots together. What doesn't work is Godzilla being a wimp in this movie. His breath doesn't do "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" against Rodan. His breath was completely useless! He just ends up throwing rocks at Rodan, who by the way, seems to just laugh it off. In the fight with Ghidrah, he's also just tossing rocks at him. Hell, Ghidrah's a wimp too since he was chased away by the rock thrown at him. I know he took a few good hits here and there, but the fact is that the last hit on him was a boulder (thrown by Godzilla) really leaves a bad impression. I know the fight can't be really long due to budget and all that, and Ghidrah was a very complex special effect to pull off, but I think it's the fight choreography that really brought it down.

I know GKTOM isn't meant to be taken as a remake of GTTHM, but come on, some of the elements we know so far parallels with it. Hopefully the movie can stand on its own as well as being seen as a remake of GTTHM. So far from the trailer, the stakes feel higher, and the monsters probably aren't going to be tossing rocks at each other. Even if the movie shares no other similarities save for the monsters, it will be a much better introduction to Ghidrah than the original movie (provided it's good of course).

Well, you posted this in the wrong forum, you've suddenly started spelling Ghidorah as Ghidra, and your take on the monster battle seems curiously superficial and uncharacteristically cranky. This thread just seems out of left field coming from you.

This is just as much about the original as it is about the upcoming movie. The upcoming movie seems to have a lot more parallels than just the monsters, such as a person warning people of impending disaster. To be fair, I know very little about the rest of the movie. I avoided spoilers and only watched trailer.

Ghidra was the original translation.

As for cranky, I don't know about that. I was describing the scenes in the movie that disappointed me the most.

I think Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster is probably Sekizawa's best script. It's extremely clever and funny, but it's somewhat let down by rushed production leading to some uneven effects and editing.

I think I've seen every possible spelling of Ghidorah in books and magazines, until the internet and Toho standardization of all the names kind of squashed that these last two decades or so.

I like that Godzilla's breath isn't super effective. We've had a few movies already where it hurts his enemy BADLY by this point: Kong gets scorched and Mothra dies with one hit. Rodan laughing it off is a nice touch that really give him some strength and shine.

While the off-screen reason was budget constraints (I think due to KG's beams being expensive to animate), I like how Showa Godzilla limits his breath use. Like he's trying to conserve energy.

Causing actual damage via his breath is something of a rarity in the later Heisei films. It's more just sparks

Funny thing is, we have no idea how powerful his breath is in the Legendary universe. While it looks like it hurt the Muto, he had to breath into its mouth to kill the female. I wonder how they'll handle Godzilla's power in KOTM.

I could be wrong, but it seemed almost as if Godzilla's attack in the Legendary film was almost more of a battering ram, a force, if you will, rather than something that burns, melts, scorches, & damages tissue due to intense heat and radiation. It knocked around the Mutos rather than penetrated. Of course the shot down the female's Maw was cool and all, but again, a similar effect could happen with any blunt force. Hopefully in KotM it will have more of it's true effect.

I imagine that if you're the type of fan who's concerned about power-levels and in seeing an increased brutality in the fight scenes, the new Legendary movie will appeal to you.
