GODZILLA: KotM SPOILERS AND SPECULATION

With so many leaks, legitimate or otherwise, and with no doubt many shot-by-shot appraisals of the footage we'll get that try to extrapolate the entire plot from said footage yet to come... I just thought it was a good idea to have a non spoiler section, a place for vague non-specific hype for this movie. Maybe a place to post posters and news and other non-specific bits of the movie's pre-release hype in the next nine and a half months to enjoy the hype without having the entire plot spoiled!

To start off: I am very excited about this movie. The monsters look great. It looks like a 60s Godzilla movie with a modern Hollywood budget and that's very exciting. Heck, in a little less than 10 months everyone in America is going to know who Mothra is! It's going to be rad.

Yes, everyone will know all of these monsters come May 2019. I am curious how they will pronounce their names. Godzilla and Mothra are obvious. For me, my preferred pronunciation for Ghidrah was how he was called just that in "Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster", "Monster Zero" and "Destroy All Monsters" (AIP version). Of course, everyone else is referring to him as GHI-DOR-AH, and I really believe that is how he will be called in this movie. I've also heard others say GAA-DORR-AH.

Yes, Rodan has been different as well. In Japan is a RA-DON. In the 1956 feature, he was RO-DON (even Nick Adams referred him to that in "Monster Zero"). Everywhere else is RO-DAN (my preference).

^ It's funny to think that so many of our pronunciations in this franchise were really dependent on the quick, dirty work of Australians in Hong Kong trying to sound American!

Honestly, I've heard them all pronounced it seems two or three different ways all my life, so I'm not going to get fussy now. I suppose I like the 'Ghee-da-rah' pronunciation over the 'Ghee-door-ah' one... but now that I think about it, maybe the best sounding one is somewhere between the two?

Didn't they change RA-don to RO-dan in the U.S. because of a popular dish soap at the time or something similar? I can't remember where I heard/read that.

Would they really care if the name of their science fiction movie shared a name with a radioactive element? The idea that it was to avoid association with a popular brand name makes more sense to me.

This is purely speculation on my part.

I'm sure everyone noticed the trailer's color palette. It's blue and gold/orange. These colors are used in movie posters a lot. Look it up if you don't know about it. The point is, these 2 colors are in contrast to each other, but in the case of this movie, also represents the 2 sides. Blue to represent Godzilla's breath, and the orange and gold for Ghidorah. If you watch the Mothra scenes, you'll notice it's also blue. However, if you look at the Rodan scenes, it's all orange and gold. Even Rodan itself is orange in color, the opposite of Mothra.

I'm speculating that Rodan is not an ally, and might be on Ghidorah's side making it a 2 V 2 movie rather than 3 against 1.

I hope it doesn't take place all at night. They did that with Pacific Rim, then the second one was totally the opposite. They need to find a good balance.

We see some daylight/twilight shots in the trailer (Rodan is definitely flying around in the daylight). Plus, I have a feeling Mothra is going to be there to give a brightness to the proceedings.

I think Skull Island struck a DECENT balance. I wouldn't worry TOO much. I think I'm only worried about getting a really good look at Ghidorah...the MONARCH site describes him as being able to create literal hurricanes and thunderstorms with him just by existing. That makes me think he'll be shrouded in clouds and rain and lightning the entire time. But again, I'm hoping Mothra's "god rays" have something to say about that.

I hope they don’t go with the “Ghi-DOOR-uh” pronunciation. I’ve always hated the way it sounds. I’d much prefer they just use the proper Japanese pronunciation “GHEE-do-rah”. You don’t have to say it with a Japanese accent for it to sound good. I’d also be ok with the original American “GHEE-drah”, though I don’t really see that happening.

As for Rodan, “RO-dan” where “dan” sounds like “Daniel” would be my preference.

That’s true. I’d be ok with “roh-DAHN” too, although something about it does indeed sound pretentious.

Yeah, I think RO-dan works better.

Or you could possibly go with “RO-dahn”, where it sounds like the traditional English version (with emphasis on the first syllable) but the “a” is pronounced more like a Japanese “ah” sound rather than “Daniel”.

Yeah I'll watch trailers but I have no interest in reading or searching out spoilers, either real or potentially real. I was definitely getting worried that I might see something I didn't want to when so many of the recent posts in the other thread seemed to be talking about leaked stuff from test screenings (especially since when those sort of spoiler conversations go on for any amount of time someone always just ends up dropping the tags and talking about stuff out in the open. I've seen it happen time and time again on many different forums).

As for pronunciations, I've always pronounced it "Ghi-DOOR-ah", even though I kinda know that's not technically correct. I just prefer how it sounds compared to "GHEE-do-rah". Rodan's just "Ro-dan" for me though. Aint no "dahn"'s about it!
