How do you top King Ghidorah in the next movie?

Yeah, I know Kong is next, but come on, Kong is at best a Spiga/Kamacuras level monster. He has no powers. Helicopter blades can damage him. I'm looking forward to King Kong Vs Godzilla, but part of me can't fathom how Kong is able to compete. Even in the original, they had to give Kong new powers and add a new weakness to Godzilla for it to even work. That's like having Batman fight Superman.

However I'd rate Kong way higher than the kaiju you listed. In fact I'd Probably place him #3 behind King Ghidora and MechaGodzilla, in terms of Godzilla's most formidable foes. We know "Kong is still growing" so this is going to be an absolute slugfest. What's curious (perhaps in a good way), is at the SDCC panel, WB/Legendary didn't make any announcements as to the future of the Monsterverse. I mean if both films are huge hits, they may wait until after to plan any more, otherwise, this *may* be it.

Don't try to top the scale of the previous film. Endless escalation is a recipe for failure anyway. I want to see the fight between Godzilla and Kong have a totally different dynamic and feel compared to the fights in KotM.

I guess it depends on what the world looks like after the events of KOTM. If it ends up as a world of monsters, like a bigger version of Monster Island, then perhaps it'll be Kong and his army of monsters, versus Godzilla and his army of monsters.

It doesn't have to be a big world ending movie like KOTM. Captain America: Civil War was on a totally different scale compared to the other Cap/Avengers movies and still delivered on a justifiable Cap/Stark fight at the end, and was far better executed than anything in Batman v Superman (where the title conflict had to take a backseat to Wonder Woman and Doomsday).

Plus, it's King Kong vs. Godzilla - as cool as supporting Toho monsters like Mothra, Ghidorah and Rodan are they don't compare to a title like that. Kong and Godzilla are the big two giant movie monsters in most peoples' minds, and their first matchup since 62 (still the biggest Toho G flick) is a big deal.

I can only echo what a few other people have said: Different story, different focus, different stakes, no need to try to "top" anything that's come before.

You top Ghidorah with something like, say, Destoroyah. An even bigger, badder villainous monster that comes in and forces Godzilla and Kong to team up.

When Toho built up Godzilla as part of their kaiju cinematic universe, they went from Godzilla to Godzilla Raids Again to King Kong vs. Godzilla to Mothra vs. Godzilla and finally to Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster.


Legendary basically went from Godzilla Raids Again to Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster to King Kong vs. Godzilla, so it does seem like the scale is getting smaller with the Kong matchup this time. That can still work well as long as the movie is good.

I'd prefer they team up somehow in the end, especially with both monsters being portrayed as good guys in this film universe. It'll definitely be interesting to see what direction KvsG goes..
