I feel that Rodan and Mothra, always being Earth-based lifeforms, can only be fellow holdovers from the same radioactive ecosystem that birthed Godzilla and the Mutos.

Ghidorah should still be from space.

The worst I can see them doing to Ghidorah is grounding him in mythology somehow, rather than making him an extraterrestrial life form. But we've seen that in GMK anyway. Beyond that, I'm in agreement with lhb.

I honestly don't get how people could think "Everything in Godzilla 2014 is such SOUND SCIENCE that an alien monster is just WAY TOO OUT THERE" I mean, you're all willing to just SWALLOW "Hey, here's a bunch of stuff that exists in no fossil record: a bajillion million fafillion years ago giant monsters walked around breathing fire and firing off EMPs and sometimes fighting each other and they managed to survive, don't you ever worry about how, and now they're doing the hibbity bibbity and the apex predator just can't stand that he can't get laid so he's a huge c***-blocker now...hey look the chick monster is gonna get herself off using a nuke as a dildo" but if a golden three-headed dragon came from space you'd be like "HEY! STOP THIS GOSHDARN MOVIE RIGHT NOW UNTIL YOU EXPLAIN THAT TO ME WITH SCIENCE!!!!! AND REALISM!!!!"
Is that what's happening?

Since the minute they announced Ghidrah, people have been asking, "But what about the realism?" and since I've first heard that question asked, I am just like:

I'm just afraid that the "ground in reality" will override the what makes Mothra more than just a giant bug monster. She could work without the worship and mysticism, but they'd have to hammer home that she's a sentient creature and an actively good monster rather than Godzilla's walking nuclear weapon/natural disaster that just happened to be pointing at a bigger threat. I'd love to have the Shobijin appear and sing a few songs in the movie, but I'm not expecting that. But an origin as a idol worshiped by an ancient tribe off some island somewhere or something would be nice.

Yeah, the Shobijin are the only things I really expect to get dropped for "REALISM" or whatever.

I do believe Ghidorah should be from space though :D

I want to slap anyone who says their favorite thing about Godzilla 2014 is the realistic take on Godzilla. This statement usually segues into a discussion on how they can explain the existence of far less mythical monsters (compared to the MUTOs) through some sort of low-ball, cheapo, fan fictiony explanation for Mothra and Ghidorah.

Legendary should just play it as straight as possible. The appeal of Ghidorah comes from the unstoppable space dragon element, and the appeal of Mothra comes from the mystical and spiritual side. To try and explain them as mutated animals would cheapen their character, and you might as well throw in another generic monster.

Yeah, I don't see why Ghidorah is so much more impossible than Godzilla representing earthly forces of nature. Ghidorah would just be the representation of the larger forces of nature in our universe like Supermassive Black Holes and Gamma-Ray Bursts.

Well scientists say that an asteroid from space was the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. So if an asteroid can cause the extinction of animals, why not have an asteroid from an alien planet be the cause of the birth of Ghidorah? :D

How about something like this: Millions of years ago, an asteroid carrying an alien spore crash lands on earth. The spore feeds off of the intense radiation, as well as somehow getting the genetic codes from existing kaiju (mutos, Godzilla, etc). Millions of years later (in 2018 to be specific), the spore matures and hatches into King Ghidorah (similar to the movie Ghidorah, the 3 headed monster).

There you go, a realistic and grounded take on King Ghidorah

If someone made me put $5 in a betting pool on Legendary King Ghidorah's origin my money would go on:
He crashed to earth in 1908 in an event code-named "The Tunguska Event". The site has been monitored and kept under wraps but whatever it was that crashed has finished healing and is now looking to assert dominance in his new home by taking out the current Alpha, Godzilla.

That way you keep the space origin, but he's also "already here" and has a real world mysterious event to tie to.

I predict a lot of Godzilla fans being super disappointed come 2018 when Legendary's Mothra isn't a magical creature who consciously lives the role of a goddess to a population of islanders, among them twelve-inch twin fairies who always speak in unison and can communicate with the monster. It might be a good idea to check those expectations.

I get where GoDziLLaX was coming from in his initial post. There are different approaches to monster movies and G14 definitely goes full sci-fi rather than fantasy, with pseudo-scientific explanations for the existence and biology of giant, fictitious animals. It's the de facto "realistic" approach to the genre, relatively speaking. Seeing the Shobijin translate monster talk in G14 would have felt as out of place as seeing it in G54.

Of course there's nothing wrong with sequels taking a drastically different approach from their predecessors, which is how G54 led to Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster in the first place. The possibility that Edwards, Tull, et al. will end up making Godzilla 2 more of a fantasy movie is certainly there but I'm not betting on it.

As fans, it's natural to hear the announcement of a classic monster and mentally assume that a whole lot of historical baggage will come with it based on individual ideas of which previous film appearances defined that character. It's easy to forget that turning Mothra into just another Earth monster has been done before in Destroy All Monsters, by Ishiro Honda no less. That film completely avoided acknowledging the concepts of the Shobijin or Mothra's deity status on Infant Island and it's the very same movie that Edwards as inspiration for where he might go with Godzilla 2.

I don't think King Ghidorah having three heads or originating from outer space would clash with the sci-fi world of Legendary's Godzilla at all.

Notice how nobody is worried about Rodan?

Kaneko also dropped the Shobijin aspect entirely. Notice how nobody says that movie is disrespectful to the character. We'll see what happens with Godzilla 2.

I'd like there to be some sort of mythical connection with Mothra, even if it's just previous appearances in history being interpreted as some sort of god. Let's say that every so many hundreds of years the larvae emerges from the sea, forages for a while, cocoons itself, emerges as an adult, and then disappears. Mothra could be seen as something like the phoenix.

The groundwork's already been done in the Godzilla '14 opening credits, which start with historical images of sea monsters (presumably Godzilla sightings through history).
