Would I watch a KK/G rematch? Yes, but it's not something I'm rooting for. Godzilla is a better fit with Pacific Rim if we are looking at a crossover.

The PacRim aliens create a bridge between Godzilla and Kong's dimensions and it turns out everything in Kong's dimension is proportionally bigger (like, people in Kongworld are the equivalent of 80 feet tall in Godzillaland), thus explaining how Godzilla and Kong are the same size.

... also, if this really is some new, just being hashed-out stuff maybe this doesn't effect the proposed trilogy of Godzilla films? Maybe we have Godzilla 2, KK vs. G, then Godzilla 3.

I was just thinking because I believe their should be as many Godzilla movies as possible.

Well, this is startling news. I'm actually a little unsure how I feel about it.

Since seeing the original Japanese cut, I've decided that what I enjoy most about King Kong vs. Godzilla is how silly it is - cleverly silly, but nonetheless silly. IIRC, this was the first giant monster film to prominently feature the "versus" set-up; yet this film also makes fun of that very set-up. The entire thing plays out in a tongue-in-cheek manner. I think about all the arguments about who "won" at the end of the film, and I think those people are missing the point. It was never about who's the stronger monster - it was all about making a grandiose excuse to just watch the two monsters fight. That's the joke!
There's also the issue of continuity. Toho's Kong had no connection to the original; it was just taken for granted that the character was the same. The Showa-era films in general were pretty loose with continuity overall, so it didn't really matter that technically, King Kong vs. Godzilla shares the same continuity with the grim & somber Gojira. KKvsG stands on its own just fine.

If we get a new King Kong versus Godzilla film, I'm worried that it would take itself too seriously. Undoubtedly it will share continuity with G2014, and it sounds possible that it might share continuity with Skull Island as well. Will one or both of the film series have to give way? My thoughts about a Godzilla/Pacific Rim crossover are the same: the two series seem to have completely different themes from each other. I don't think a new match-up would work unless it followed a similar tone/style to the original King Kong vs. Godzilla - and for that, I suspect the film would have to stand entirely on its own. If Legendary can pull that off, then hats off to them - but would the mainstream audiences accept that? Tight continuity seems to be what is expected from series now.

I just don't think that the drive-in/matinee audience that would go out to the theater just to see famous monsters duking it out in a goofy fun movie exists anymore, and any attempt at a "serious" King Kong vs. Godzilla honestly strikes me as a contrived, pretentious idea.

I'm all over this just give me a release date! I'll plan my vacation at the beach and spend 11:00-4:00 in giant monste destruction heaven!!
They are perfect opponents! Giant humonaid agressive age vs an antidilurein seamonster!. The icons of giant monsters deserve another go.. Hopefully in a super cell storm to power up KK with sheiths of lightening strikes..,and no EMT team to call it when going gets a concussion fro rocks shots. Lol
No worries about adjusting size. It will be done in away to satisfy many fans. Those that aren't will still go for the pure joy of seeing icons on the screen against each other after 50 + years. I see no way it can fail me as a fan. The original is easily my favorite Godzilla movie. To me this will be like getting an encore that could perhaps enter KKvsG hallowed place in my heart. I can remembering writing a letter to FJA at Famous Monsters of Filmland when I was 12 to request to TOHO and Universal to do remake in 1977. Hey it worked 42 years later. Thanks FJA! May you rest in peace.,

Kong's public domain status is confusing, but the long and the short of it is...he's not REALLY in the public domain...only the novelization of the original film is public domain...but only those parts of it that aren't featured in the movie...so umm, things and stuff...but the answer is he's not.

Thanks Ben. I knew Kong wasn't PD, and I knew only the novelization of the 1933 film was, but I didn't know specifically who held the rights.

Well..wow..what an interesting past 18 hours or so. I leave work, and all this happens You know its "real" when you scroll down Yahoo news front page and there are no less than 3 articles about KK & Godzilla now in a "shared" universe. I would love to see a modern take on this. In fact I posted something on Yahoo a couple weeks ago about how I'd love to see it, but it will never happen (actually I said that also about McDonalds all day breakfast also a couple weeks ago... eerie), maybe I should also say, there is no way in chance I will win the lotto either.

But whatever happens, I just hope that whatever contrivance is used to bring these two monsters together, if that indeed is the plan, that Kong is not in some way cyber enhanced. I don't want him to be piloting a Jeager, or a giant Mecha of some kind. I don't want him to be "mutated" by PR Aliens beyond recognition. (I keep envisioning a 400 ft tall mutant from the end of PON, no thank you). I just want good ol' classic KK vs Godzilla action, of course in a modern setting.

I mean I know Freddy vs. Jason was played mostly for laughs, but the first Alien vs. Predator film seemed to take itself pretty seriously (never saw the 2nd one). It will be difficult, but if they can find a way to have quasi-believability, and maintain a sense of fun and excitement, then I think they will have satisfied most fans.

Wow I arrive at work this morning, and scrolling through news I see King Kong Vs Godzilla being announced. WOW!!! Just WOW!! I could feel in my bones that this thing was eventually going to happen someday, but now it's just so....REAL! Wahoooooooo!!!!!

Now I'm just laughing that so many people (including on this forum) would say this was never going to happen. Well here it is happening

The ony thing I cant think of, it's that it willl only be a shared universe, and Kong will not fight Godzilla, the only other franchise I can imagine can have a (non-canon) crossover with Legendary Godzilla is Pacific Rim.

My thoughts still linger on when Universal decided to put “Jurassic World II” I believe a week after “Godzilla 2”. Did this set something off at Legendary? If both films were Legendary productions, then they would be competing against each other. I wonder if that ticked off Thomas Tull and he decided to say, screw you Universal, I am taking the Kong movie to Warner Brothers, and once there, we will eventually have a big monster brawl ourselves in Kong and Big G (not to mention, there seems to be some sort of delay with “Pacific Rim II”).

This news just came WAY out of left field. It is a real curiosity indeed. Let us see what the future holds.
