GODZILLA vs. KONG (November 20, 2020)

... I honestly don't see how that's much different from the pools of writers who eventually generated the previous 2 Monsterverse films. This seems more like a brainstorming committee to hash out a bunch of ideas so's they can quickly start on making this movie.

If Dougherty is directing (seems feasible, filming both films back-to-back), it kinda doesn't matter who's in the writing pool for a few early drafts. He's enough of an auteur and screenwriter in his own right that I actually think he'd be able to beef up a flawed script and still turn in a good film, as opposed to Gareth Edwards, who I think can DIRECT THE CRAP OUT OF THINGS, but doesn't have as strong a feel for story and character.

I hope we get to spend a little more time on Skull Island in this film. I also hope Monarch has an observation and research outpost on this island to monitor the island monsters. Possibly a Monarch experiment lures Godzilla here causing the first battle between Kong and the big G.

Very nice interview with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who said no when asked if he was interested in directing Godzilla Vs Kong.

Although I think he did a great job with Kong Skull Island, I'm glad he"s not interested. I am still hoping Legendary gets Guillermo Del Toro to direct. He would be perfect. He loves Godzilla and the kaiju genre and has already worked for Legendary Pictures. So c'mon Legendary, sign him up!

Guillermo is knee deep with his own projects, that I don't think he could fit Godzilla / Kong in his schedule.

In the past, I stated that if "Kong: Skull Island" were to be quite successful, Legendary would probably give the keys to Jordan Vogt-Roberts for Godzilla / Kong. Well, it was indeed that and I thought Jordan would have been a good choice to helm the 2020 movie, but it looks like he has now taken himself out of the running.

I did read an article that Gareth Edwards was interested in coming back to the Monsterverse and particularly doing this movie, but that was published on April 1st, so I took it all with a grain of salt. That article is somewhere, so I will have to do some digging to find it.

I think Jordan Vogt-Roberts is keen on getting the Metal Gear movie off the ground, as I understand that's his dream project.

Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, but they moved up the release date for Godzilla Vs Kong from May 29 to May 22, 2020. I imagine it's a good thing because most people are off on memorial day weekend and can watch the movie. I just hope there's no competition from any Marvel, DC or other blockbusters during that weekend.

Nice. Warner Bros. must be feeling confident in what they've got planned for the movie if they're willing to stick it on Memorial Day weekend. The public's warm reception for Kong: Skull Island probably had something to do with that. WB also moved their computer-animated Scooby picture to the week before Godzilla vs. Kong (it was originally set for September 2018).

The only other film currently scheduled for May 2020 is an untitled Marvel movie on the first of the month. 2020 will be the sixth consecutive year (and eleventh overall) that Marvel kicks off the summer season with an MCU entry at the beginning of May. My guess is it will end up being James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 but who knows? In any case, Godzilla vs. Kong should be fine opening three weeks later.

Of course, with the "young Han Solo" movie and Star Wars - Episode IX currently scheduled to open on Memorial Day weekend in 2018 and 2019 respectively, and with Fox already staking out 2020 as the year when James Cameron's Avatar sequels become an annual December event, Disney may very well be planning to open their next Star Wars spinoff on Memorial Day weekend in 2020.

I wonder if Paramount will try to put in a Transformers movie during that same date, and see if they could mess up this scheduled release. It worked before.

I don't know, wouldn't it make sense to release it around March (like Godzilla 2) where there's usually no major competition? Seems to me Godzilla Vs Kong would make more money during a relatively less busy month rather than May, June or July where there is an over saturation of mega blockbusters.

While I do believe that Godzilla Vs Kong has the potential of being a huge hit, but if it goes up against movies like Transformers, Marvel or Star Wars I don't feel it will fair well against them. I hope I am wrong. I hope Godzilla Vs Kong makes a billion worldwide so we can see more MonsterVerse movies

March 2020 is currently wide open with only an untitled Pixar movie slotted on the 13th, although I'm sure the studios will add plenty more to that month's release schedule over the next three years. We're at a point where Hollywood is just producing so darn many movies that there's practically never going to be another month in the foreseeable future that doesn't have several big-budget and/or high-profile studio tentpoles opening wide. The month of March may very well become the new start of the summer moviegoing season if it and April keep being as packed with huge releases as they've been in recent years, and both Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters are a part of that trend.

Skull Island has performed at peak potential even though it opened after Get Out and Logan and was followed by Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers. Not every movie can be a hit but if Godzilla vs. Kong looks good and impresses audiences, it will hold its own just fine along with the competition. Hell, if Godzilla 2 is as well-received as Kong, it might be the other studios who end up trying to avoid Godzilla vs. Kong on the calendar. The only thing Warner Bros. has to watch out for is if something bigger moves onto that same release date like Star Wars or Transformers.
