GODZILLA vs. KONG (November 20, 2020)

There's been this steady drip of monsters designed for Kong: Skull Island that didn't make it into the finished film, and I really hope we see one or more of them in Godzilla vs. Kong. I really want this guy to show up:



Tiger with antlers! TIGER WITH ANTLERS!!!

Of course, I'm sure Wingard will want to put his own stamp on things and create some original creatures, too.

Seeing as these two were (and are) benevolent by nature, it comes to no surprise, that they will now feature monsters other than Godzilla and Kong. This is not 1962, where both were considered menaces and with Godzilla, the outright villain of the film.

The big question that fans will now be speculating on is who will these monsters be? Are Ghidrah, Mothra and Rodan contracted for only one movie? Or will this be a brand new creation by Legendary? Will they resurrect creatures that they already have the rights to (like the Kraken)? Or will they obtain the rights to other Toho monsters (or heck, even Gamera)?

He may want you to sympathize with 'em, but he's not forgetting the promise of the title match: Wingard says the fight between Godzilla and Kong will have a clear winner!

Honestly, since he's the underdog I think Kong winning makes the most sense dramatically. Something like the ending of Mothra vs. Godzilla, where Kong uses his brains to incapacitate (but not too permanently injure) Godzilla, ending the fight. Kong could do something like a manual version of the Yaguchi plan, and lure Godzilla to a spot where he's strategically weakened some skyscrapers and then topple one building after another onto Godzilla.

^Sure, why not? It's only fictional, and Godzilla loses all the time.

It doesn't matter, but Kong will win because:

1) Dramatically, it makes no sense for Goliath to beat David.

2) Legendary doesn't have the rights to Godzilla post-King Kong vs. Godzilla, so Legendary will hedge their bets Toho doesn't want to re-up their deal (more possible than people think, the giant success of Shin Godzilla might have Toho confident they can make more domestically than whatever percentage they're getting on the Legendary deal).

^It depends: if they want to continue the MonsterVerse past Godzilla vs. Kong it'd be hard to do so without the underpinning of Godzilla (the most famous monster) and the rest of the Toho crew. Of course, the thing about a science fiction/fantasy franchise like Godzilla is Godzillla can always be brought back if they want, and it could be dramatically satisfying if they 'kill' Godzilla, then have another Kong movie and maybe a Mothra movie or whatever and then bring Godzilla back from the dead in a Destroy All Monsters kind of uber-finale.

I do think that if Legendary decides to re-up their contract with Toho that Toho will try for more freedom to produce their domestic Godzilla films. Either a less restrictive time window or, if possible, none at all or the freedom to deal with such things on a case-by-case basis.

Regarding which monster will win, two questions to consider:

1. How many times will Godzilla and Kong fight each other in the new movie? They fought twice in the 1962 film; Godzilla won their first encounter and then Kong won the final battle. The 2020 film could also have two fights, or three, or more. There are a lot of win/loss/draw possibilities.

2. Will the final battle between Godzilla and Kong be the final monster brawl of the movie? There's always the possibility that King Ghidorah or another 'big bad' could appear in the third act. Suppose Kong does pull off a Yaguchi Plan and bury Godzilla under skyscrapers, only to then have to frantically dig him out to get his help!

A few people (very loud ones) are freaking out over this movie because of Death Note. They must be young and think this director has a say on how the movie goes. Death Note wasn't even that bad. It was messy but I don't know what people expect when you take a series and condense it down to a 100 minute movie.

Big ape vs. Big lizard. The only way he can mess that up is if he has kiss on screen and not fight.

I thought the movie (Death Note) was watchable despite it's messy delivery. I feel no need for concern yet. Making Death Note into a 100 minute movie was suicide anyways in my opinion.

I mean, how hard is it to make a movie about a giant gorilla fighting a giant reptile? Eh?

Wingard is mistaken if he thinks Godzilla fans won't be raising false uncertainty about the ending of the movie.

The film could end with Kong dropping a mountain on Godzilla and people throwing Kong a victory parade and there would still be a segment of Godzilla fandom insisting that it's a draw, just too close to call.

Horse-race mentality is a powerful drive and it will have modern-day Godzilla loyalists "debating" any time Godzilla loses (case in point: the outcome of the 1962 film ).

interesting insight. I never considered that the shift in tone may have been in part to address the concept stretching beyond the established "rules of the world" they had built in the first two films
