I would certainly like to see new solo films starring Rodan, Mothra, or other Toho monsters. I mean, what kaiju fan wouldn't? Spinoffs of Legendary's Godzilla series are a nice idea, but realistically speaking they're not going to happen. We're lucky to have LP turning out big-budget creature features at a rate of one per year from 2013 through 2018. Monster movies simply don't sell the level of tickets that star-studded superhero tentpoles do so I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect Legendary Pictures to go the Marvel Studios route and start cranking out more films with an interconnected continuity.

We've had Pacific Rim and Godzilla, and we've still got Jurassic World, Skull Island, Pacific Rim 2, and Godzilla 2 to look forward to in the next four years. I'm content with this.

I only see a spinoff happening if there's some great audience response to a monster, like Mothra or King Ghidorah. If one of those guys really takes off in the public consciousness after an appearance in an upcoming Godzilla movie? I can see them getting solo films in that case.

Being introduced in their own films only to crossover with Godzilla? Highly unlikely.

I'd love to see spinoff monster movies, but these require large budgets and seeing how both Pacific Rim and Godzilla failed to absolutely crush the box office, I can't see other monster films being considered. They are too risky. And frankly, I'd rather see Godzilla movies instead of other monsters...but maybe that's just me.

Side note, but I was thinking today how this new film could have been a super serious throwback to 54. I kinda hate that it wasn't. Edwards also shoots his films from unique vantage points, but I really missed seeing Godzilla in a bunch of wide city shots. We had a few, but you couldn't quite take in how huge he was.

Meh. It was a good movie, but I would have handled it differently.

Speaking hypothetically, of course, another Mothra film would be great to see. If nothing else, there's an opportunity to capture a different sort of audience for a kaiju movie. IIRC, the last one really targeted at women was Godzilla vs. Mothra. It'd be interesting, at least, to see someone focus on that demographic again. G2014 doesn't have much for women (referring both to the cast and the audience). If the sequels won't change that, at least Mothra could promise an alternative.

Mothra has starred in 4 Toho movies. I think that Mothra could handle a solo Legendary movie. That what I think.

A solo King Ghidorah movie would be awesome, especially if he retains his outer space origins. Cast the movie in the mold of Toho's showa era solo films, but set it on a distant alien planet.

For instance, Legendary could even keep King Ghidorah as an ancient interstellar menace without really explaining his origins, with the movie showing what KG was up to before hitting Earth. Maybe show KG destroying a random civilization (or their entire planet) on his way towards Earth.

Alternatively, if Legendary could use King Ghidorah and work with Toho to borrow elements from THE MYSTERIANS (heavily reworked though) and develop the film in a way to heavily evoke Toho's showa era sci-fi films. Mysteroid is now light years away from Earth; Moguera is built in attempt to fend off or destroy King Ghidorah as the Mysterians had long known he was coming; the defense of planet fails and it is destroyed by KG but as the Mysterians had a plenty of time to prepare they were able to evacuate all/most of the population elsewhere (obviously leaving the door open for Mysterians to show up on Earth in a future movie).

i still think spinoff books would be the best why to go.

For a shared universe it'd facilitate having some characters that'd pop up in several of the movie. They really need to make or show that Monarch is something rather important, like SHIELD meets GPN/G-force or something, rather than two scientists. Maybe less militaristic and more science and discovery.

But I'd be soooooo down for that.

Not to get anyone's hopes up but if Legendary is trying to make a giant monster version of the Avengers then I believe this bodes well for a spinoff. If Skull Island really takes off, I can definitely see a Rodan on Mothra movie being made. Especially since they will be introduced in the godzilla universe much like how Marvel introduced some lesser characters in their films before they received their own features i.e. Black Widow getting her own film.

Well, they might be trying to create a cinematic universe, like Marvel.

Godzilla 2014 might have been the start, and Skull Island could be a build up if in the same world.
