Could we get spinoffs?

They just barely cracked 200 million domestically on a reboot featuring Godzilla, a global icon, after a four year build-up. The odds of a different Toho monster headlining it's own spin-off independent of Godzilla is ridiculously unlikely.

Agreed. The other monsters just don't have the marque appeal that Godzilla does.

Yeah, I don't see how a film about a giant dinosaur destroying a city doesn't do solid business. Particularly when you're in the camp with me and think under different conditions "Godzilla" (2014) would've made more domestically.

A "Rodan" film would have to have the budget cut to TMNT area, like 100-125 to give it a shot at being successful. I could see it making 200 overseas and another 125 here. Not sure if they would consider 325m successful. If they marketed it right and put in some other kaiju, I think there could be potential in the idea. LP though might be thinking it'll be best to keep these characters within the Godzilla films.

I would love for it to happen, kind of a LP cinematic kaijuverse(not involving PR though), but it may be to risky for them. While GODZILLAs final numbers were solid, they died out quickly except in a few markets like China and Japan. THOUGH I will say, any type of monster film has a chance to succeed just because of Chinas BO market.

I doubt Rodan would be that successful. I see zero chance of stand alone films. Godzilla was profitable, but not so profitable it's worth risking a big budgeted Rodan. You would need other monsters to help carry the film. Even Pacific Rim struggled to do well. I can't see Rodan being worth the risk.

Could’ve, would’ve, should’ve. Unless you are a nomadic gypsy fortune teller, no one knows how the box-office could have been even if it was the Godzilla some had hoped and imagined. Movie box-offices can be like the baseball playoffs – a crapshoot. My Dodgers were supposed to be in the World Series because they have the best pitcher on Earth. That didn’t happen!

Truth be told, I didn’t think any Godzilla movie could have cracked $200 million. Some people’s expectations were indeed too high. But for someone like me, it actually exceeded the outlook I had envisioned.

IMO, any spin offs are now going to be very dependent on how well Pacific Rim 2, Godzilla 2, and Skull Island do. Honestly, is there really enough room at Legendary Pictures to take on a FOURTH Giant Monster franchise? They've already got two now and are aiming to add a third, and as far as I can tell fully intend to keep all three separate. I think the chances of a Rodan or Mothra spin-off fell pretty sharply after LP revealed they were rebooting King Kong for Universal. Their three upcoming entries (and Godzilla 2 in particular) would need to do REALLY well, IMO, to justify a Godzilla spin-off.

I'm very optimistic about these movies and how they're going to do, but there IS a limit to that. ^_^()

I can only really see Mothra being a spin off character. Unlike Rodan, she actually has her own rivals that could be fit into such a movie and do a decent storytelling. Hollywood Mothra vs. Battra, anyone?

I thought this topic was laid to rest. There will be no spin offs. If Godzilla isn't in the title whether he's in the movie or not, it will not happen.

This is just my opinion, but I don't believe in saying something will never happen. This is Hollywood, if something makes the slightest profit studios will make more. I remember years ago people use to say we will never get a Spiderman movie, we will never get an Avengers movie, we will never get another US Godzilla movie. Well guess what? We have plenty of Spiderman movies, plenty of Marvel movies (included two Avengers), and two more US Godzilla movies to look forward to.

Personally I don't care for a US Mothra movie, but if the next two Godzilla sequels, Skull Island and Pacific Rim 2 become hits (which I believe they will), then spinoffs will become a strong possibility. Giant monster movies are making a comeback, and if they continue making profit then studios will be making more and more. Just my opinion

I don't EVER see standalone non-Godzilla films featuring other Toho characters ever being made in the US. It's beyond a long shot. The American giant monster genre will NEVER take off the way the superhero genre has to ever make something like that feasible. Get back to me when giant monster films start making Marvel/Batman money.

Pacific Rim 2, Skull Island and the next Godzilla film will certainly be successful, but I don't think anyone in charge of these films is going to believe a standalone Rodan or Mothra film is a good idea. If it's going to star Toho characters, Godzilla is no doubt going to be in the movie as well.
