Inflation is almost pointless to discuss.... A example is G98.. If ticket prices were $10+ back then, it wouldn't have made what it did.

With the dry spell on kaiju movies in Japan, G14 did fine. GODZILLA is actually at about 30m now there as well.

GODZILLA will end its run with around 31-32m in Japan. That's the highest grossing Godzilla film in Japan since GMKs 20m in 2001/2002.

GODZILLA will finish with about 520m Worldwide.

So, lets talk about GODZILLA 2 at the box office. I believe it'll end up being huge overseas, making 100-150 more than the first. In 3-4 years, Chinas market may end up being bigger than ours, and could easily make 150m there alone. Adding classic foes will help it in Japan and South Korea(which is as big a market as Japan).

The U.S will be interesting.. With inflation in 3-4 years it may end up with 200m, but I think it'll take a hit here making between 150-170. So Worldwide total I'm thinking like 600-650m for the sequel.

I personally think the amount of actual tickets sold for the sequel could very well be less than the first unless the film fixes the first one's issues significantly. But even then, the movie could still make more thank to four years of rising ticket prices.

Maybe after new Jurassic Park and Kong and Pacific Rim films folks will be so giant monster crazy that Godzilla v. Mothra '18 will be the biggest movie ever?

I think anything considered "dramatically different" was realized by the fans more so than the general audience. The fans that got hoodwinked, well, that's their fault. There was no hoodwink in this corner when interviews revealed that this WAS NOT a solo Godzilla picture. All my expectations were met to the fullest.

I have heard literally nothing about the 'false advertising' aspect of all this from any non-fans. It's a non-issue.

If the Godzilla 2 trailer is bait-and-switch (even effective bait-and-switch, like G2014), then I don't see casual moviegoers going for it.

It needs to be lots of Godzilla stomping ass, more appealing human characters, and a sampling mystery/conspiracy theory elements (I'm confident many casual moviegoers were sold after "Not tests. They were trying to kill it.")

Wrath of the Titans, another Legendary film heavily featuring mythical monsters and a generic beefcake lead actor, being a notable exception.

It just needs to be a strong sci-fi sequel like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

GODZILLA has ended its run in America with 200.6m. It'll end its run in Japan in a week or two with 31-32. So we'll end with just over 525m globally. Good run overall for a first of a trilogy, finishing about 25m short than KONG05, but 115m more than PACIFIC RIM.

I agree with the marketing for G2 needing to directly let the public know "you wanted more monster action, you got it" type of thing. G2 will fail hard if they do the same thing again, maybe not even getting the 3rd.

Seems like its topping off With GoTG releasing there today I dont think it will hit 32M let alone 33.
But this is a great start to a new series of films. I mean look at :
Sherlock Holmes
Wall-E
How to Train Your Dragon
Oz
Rio
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Lego Movie
The Hangover
Star Trek Into Darkness
Gladiator
The last samurai
300
The Matrices (1 2 and 3)
Oceans 11
X men 1 2 and 3

The list goes on and on.
Heck it may even pass The Simpsons Movie when the final Japanese box office numbers come in. And we all know how well The Simpsons is loved internationally. I don't see how this is anything but a great theatrical run.
Now to decide which DVD/Blu-ray package to get Tuesday...
