Well, the movie finally showed up over here, and I led a crew of 7 from work to go see the 6:05pm showing on opening day, July 25. Being a Friday, most people were still at work, so the theater was only about 1/4 full. We saw a 2D subtitled version, which only has two shows a day. The 3D Japanese dubbed version shows five times a day. Being a mid-day showing, we had to pay the full ¥1,800 price, so our contribution to the Japanese box office was ¥12,600.

We all loved it! People clapped at the end. The Japanese staff also thought it was fantastic, and an excellent version of Godzilla, well deserving of the name. We also all felt the movie could have used more Godzilla in it, but overall, it was great. Hopefully I'll be tossing several thousand more yen into the Japanese box office in the next week or so!

With $199,922,XXX in the US, and $299,000,000 Foreign listed right now on Box Office Mojo (where it was ranked 26th Thursday (probably 27,28, or 29 counting Guardians, Get on Up etc)) it looks like today is the day Godzilla Smashes $200,000,000 in the US and half a billion worldwide.
Of course by the time numbers come in officially Monday or Tuesday it will have well surpassed Superman Returns to take the 50th spot on the all time Imax feature film list (at least until GotG catches up) and will be on its way to approaching WWZ territory before its run ends. They have Japan at about $5Million now as well. Was surprised but pleased to see Godzilla vs Biollante did so well in the poll of favorite films there as shown in the recent SciFi Tv ep: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2014 ... -godzilla/ (thanks too for the comicon update KPA and staff!). Was worried compared to the rest of the Hesei films it was under appreciated considering its box office numbers in comparison to the 90s films, but it seems Box Office doesn't always equal satisfaction there either.

If they give it another month, 201 might happen. Not that it matters. GODZILLA will probably finish around 35m in Japan. Decent considering kaiju films have bombed there in recent years.

GODZILLA Box Office Update (Monday, August 4): Toho sent the final Japan weekend numbers to Warner Bros. and GODZILLA did better than yesterday’s estimates. The latest Japanese, US, international and worldwide box office numbers from Warner Bros. and Toho are now on SciFi Japan!

Apparently the big G fell to 7th in Japan this weekend.
No word yet as to the numbers it made there but it was forced down by the release of Trans4mers among others.

Also its down in the US as well a bit. If they want to pull it while its on top and in 10th for the year 12th for the past 365 days domestically this is the week to do it. PotA will pass it if its in another weekend, and its already been in longer than a lot of films like Thor 2 ( but also not as long as films like divergent) I have no idea what it costs to keep it in theatres but since it will be on DVD and blu ray a month from Saturday time is probably short anyway. 50th IMAX of all time, 147 domestic of all time, 35th 3D of all time, 10th cgi star, 9th legendary, 8th disaster, 4th creature feature, 1st foreign remake and 5th biggest opener of 2014.
Either way its been a great run and we have sequels with some fan favorites promised. I have no regrets.

Also unrelated but RIP to Robin Williams.

The obsession over every dollar this movie makes speaks more for the insecurity of the collective fanbase than anything else.

Insecurity has nothing to do with it. If anything it has to do with well-wishers who monitor success or lack thereof through numbers. Numbers never lie.

The movie grossed over $200 million domestic and over $300 million international for a total of over $500 million worldwide, more than triple its $160 million production budget.

The exact final dollar amount doesn't make a difference at this point. The film has been a very profitable success and we're getting a sequel for sure. Godzilla will rise from the depths once again!
