OK - I read everything you wrote, and I read it again. Would you say you liked the movie or that you just liked certain parts of the movie? Were there actually glimpses of the 13 other Titans?
The future is big, sparkling warble of superclean and we should endevour to do our best to wash our feet by it.

GOod for you Jelly muscling your way into the theater. I am also curious about how much of the other titans we see^^^ (I didn't read your spoiler tags but I don't consider the other titans spoilery)

I suspect you only get a good look at a 3-4 tops and the rest are on monitors. Eh?

It's crazy that within a decade we went from midnight premieres of movies on Thursdays to late evening showings on Thursdays to now where a big movie is essentially in wide release on Thursday. There's a dozen screenings of the film on the 30th at the theater I'm going to! I'm not even going to the earliest few, since that would be during working hours!

I liked it a lot. Maybe just within arms' reach of loving it. It's such a blisteringly fast-paced movie it was overwhelming and hard to take it all in. Rewatches will help settle it down for me and I'll figure out whether it lands in my top say, 6-ish, or more around the upper-middle of the franchise. It's in that 6-15 range for me. That's a big range, but that's also a clustering of a lot of movies that I really like and love a lot...so, it's not a wide variety in "quality" for me.

As for the other Titans, just in case someone like lhb or anyone else might consider that spoiler-territory:
Spoiler Below:
From what I remember, you've already seen all you'll see of the mountain monster. I legitimately don't remember getting a full reveal on that one. You get a better glimpse of the arachnid one, and then it has a slightly better glimpse again later, then there's one that kinda looks like a woolly mammoth with arms, or Kong with woolly mammoth tusks, something in that realm (this one might be the most-seen of the other Titans), and then another one that I think is MUTO Prime, or looks more or less like that to me. Those are the only ones I legitimately remember seeing...and their appearances are fleeting.
As for them getting named or anything like that, I'm sure that will happen eventually. There's definitely a "Oh I'm gonna screenshot that" moment where they throw all their names up on the screen. I remember, uhhh...Typhoon? and Methuzela.

Oh and Kong gets name-dropped a few times, and shown in some archival footage.
Gills.

A question for you, Mr. Donut...

Regarding the effects, can we actually SEE what's going on during the monster battles or is the CG work murked up fairly heavily with darkness, dust and whatnot? I was hoping for at least one set piece with them tearing it up in broad daylight. Everything else you wrote sounds encouraging. Thanks for the thoughts and comments.

No real daylight battles to speak of. I thought you could still see everything fairly well though.

Ghidorah's very existence causes a hurricane to follow him around wherever he goes, so that's a thing. Rodan's initial appearance is semi-daylight-ish. That's about it.

I'm glad it's a fast paced film. I wasn't a huge fan of the slow build in Godzilla 2014 but was fine with how the action balanced out well with Kong Skull Island. This film has an even faster pace than that according to what I've read thus far so I'm quite satisfied knowing that. I still have to wait til next Thursday night. :(

Hey if that's your thing, more power to you, and you'll probably really REALLY dig this. Rewatching the 2014 movie the other day, I was struck by how near-perfect I found the pacing and the build for the MAJORITY of the movie. It just keeps stacking things on top of one another and layering the stakes and consequences in such a well thought-out way that I was held pretty rapt for much of the run time. I would have liked a little more kaiju action in the climax, but everything leading up to it, in terms of the pacing, is perfect for me. It's just unfortunate that Ford is such a dull character.

MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT

Beware, this latest TV spot has several shots that I would call spoilers, but it's from the Warner Bros. Pictures YouTube channel.

jellydonut25 wrote:the 60s and 70s monster-mash Godzilla movies were always the preferred fare of both those selling and those buying kaiju products. Colorful, with good music, and packed to the gills with men in rubber suits slapping each other silly, the Jun Fukuda Godzilla movies are the comfort food of kaiju eiga. If you're further like me, you hit a point where these movies seemed a little TOO silly and embarrassing for you. Sure, they were fun, but oh man that melodrama and those effects, right? I mean, could someone try to do this seriously please and maybe give it a budget?
If you're still further like me, and now you're just starting to creep me out, you probably grew out of THAT, and have come to just embrace the campy Godzilla with open, loving arms as part of the franchise's rich history.

You're describing what I went through with most of the '90s movies during my high school and college years. There were points where I couldn't get past the Heisei Series' progressively lazy effects and rehashing of plot and visual elements from the classic films. Now I'm at a point where I'm over it. These movies are what they are and it's not like I would ever want to watch any Lucasized edited versions of any Godzilla films. Flaws and all, they're time capsules of where the Godzilla franchise was at that point in history and I can enjoy occasionally watching Spacegodzilla from that perspective if nothing else.

Did you hear any of the classic kaiju sound effects in G:KotM at all? That newest TV spot from WB has a classic Godzilla roar at the 10-second mark and so have a few other ads. This one had a classic Mothra screech at the 25-second mark.

^^ Have listened to Godzilla's and Mothra's themes and they're just everything I could hope for. Love how Bear does 'em clean for a verse before bringing in his extra instrumentation and chanting.

OK Jelly... one other thing: how was the audience reaction to the film, in your opinion?? (You may have been so focused on the film itself you may not have noticed much  ) but I am curious if the 'average' non-kaiju fans in the theater got drawn in by the film... laughed, cheered, clapped, rooted for the monsters, etc.

How much folks get into this movie will obviously determine repeat viewings and word-of-mouth recommendation to others.

And while I'm at it... I would very interested in hearing or reading about the reaction of the folks at Toho to this new film. I recall execs being teary-eyed at the 2014 film. I can only imagine how they'll feel about this entry! Not to mention how Japanese (and G-fans in particular) will react to the movie. There was a cool reaction vid to the 2nd teaser trailer on YouTube from a Japanese fan; he was calm and thoughtful through most of it (typical reserved Japanese) but was downright giddy and bug-eyed by the end, where Godzilla and King Ghidorah were charging at one another.

SciFi Japan has posted the complete final credits for Godzilla: King of the Monsters courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures. There are several interesting tidbits within.

  • Like Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island, Kyle Cooper has once again provided the opening credit sequence.

  • While G'14 was credited as "Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Present... A Legendary Pictures Production," G:KotM is presented as "A Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Presentation... A Legendary Pictures Production... In Association with Toho Co., Ltd.... In Association with Huahua Media."

  • An actor named TJ Storm did the CGI performance capture for Godzilla.

  • Spoiler Below:
Joe Morton, the actor who played Skynet's unwitting father Miles Bennett Dyson in Terminator 2, is playing an older version of Dr. Houston Brooks in G:KotM. Brooks was the geologist character played by Corey Hawkins in Kong: Skull Island and that character also returned in the Skull Island: The Birth of Kong comic book series from Legendary.
  • Vince Foster plays G-Team Officer Tippett and Shauna Rappold plays G-Team Officer Harryhausen!

  • A total of six companies provided visual effects for the film: MPC, Double Negative, RodeoFX, Ollin VFX, Raynault VFX, and Savage VFX. Industrial Light & Magic worked on visual development while The Third Floor and Day For Nite did pre-visualization. Amalgamated Dynamics and Legacy Effects worked on the conceptual creature designs and Weta provided concept art.

  • The end credits include a dedication to both Yoshimitsu Banno and Haruo Nakajima.

Even though it's not officially "his" theme, I'd have liked it if they'd chosen to use the theme Toho borrowed for King Ghidorah in 1991. His new theme is imposing, but I really like that particular piece.

^ Ghidorah's 1991 theme is a reworking of his 1964 theme!

I would have loved to hear Bear McCreary's rendition of the classic Ghidorah theme but I'm just glad that he incorporated the classic Godzilla and Mothra themes. It's so surreal that we're getting those in a new Hollywood Godzilla movie!

I can understand only using Godzilla's and Mothra's respective themes. Ifukube made some great music for Ghidorah and Rodan, but nothing as iconic or wedded to the character.

As far as classic sound effects, Godzilla’s roar at times is straight up 70s/90s. Mothra sounds very rooted in Mothra classic. Ghidrah....eh....occasionally you can hear a little classic cackle kinda creep through but not really. And Rodan? I didn’t hear Rodan at all. Not that I REALLY care about those things overmuch, because I thought Ghidrah was awesome and never really thought about the roar.

As far as crowd reaction, definitely positive. Some of the humor actually plays better in context and just in general people laughed along a lot. Though the “oh my God....zilla” part still clunked to the ground with an absolute thud. Everyone liked it but I don’t know how many of them were still thinking about it even as soon as they got to their cars. It’s that kind of a fun popcorn movie.
