The monsters have terrific, distinctive themes that suits them perfectly. Nothing any Hollywood composer comes up with will be as evocative.

Each monster should get one playing of his/her classic theme.

No different than Rocky or James Bond (or Mission Impossible for a recent example). You need that music.

I think it's legit, if only because it seems way too influenced by natural predators, just like Legendary's Godzilla design is. Not much to complain about otherwise. Definitely the best of the Legendary designs (especially if the Mothra design is real, good god).

Some other stuff is floating around... I'm staying away from story spoilers but as for the designs I'll have to wait and see more...

Yeah I'm staying away from story spoilers as well, but possible monster designs I'm fine with having a look at. And yeah, if that Rodan maquette is legit, then I like it too. The pose and angle make it look a little on the "giant torso, tiny legs" side of things, but that's clearly just the specific perspective we're seeing it from here. The head looks distinctly "Rodan" while obviously swaying a bit closer to reality than the original films did, and I've got nothing to complain about with any of the rest of it. It looks really good.

Wait, there are Mothra designs floating around? I must have missed it. Can someone link it?

I don't hate that Mothra design as far as something on it's own. Those legs are way too long though for me to consider it Mothra. I think Ghidorah looks great and Rodan looks decent minus the feathers.

I'm honestly fine with that Mothra design. To me it's no more drastic a redesign than the various Rebirth of Mothra transformations or the wasp-based GMK design. I always expected them to beef up her legs to make it easier for grabbing and grappling.

I can dig Rodan and come around to Ghidorah (although I'm bummed they seemingly went with the wyvern/bat crawling posture) but I really hope that promo image is more indicative of the Mothra design that whatever those sketches seem to show.

And I know there's like 5 of us here but can we change the thread title to Godzilla: King of the Monsters - May, 31, 2019?

Also - After Desplat's Oscar win for Shape of Water I can see them bringing him back, if not it's highly likely Dougherty's regular composer Douglas Pipes might be doing the score.

I’m with Jelly, those sketches at best could be brainstorming, IMO at least for Ghidorah, I think it will be massive and menacing and because of CGI probably faster and a bit more agile. If it can use its wings from time to time as forelimbs I’m cool with that because just walking around with wings open wide while traditional would seem silly. Now as an initial intimidation move I almost expect Ghidorah to land with wings spread (not unlike the Male Muto’s initial reaction to first seeing Godzilla and how many creatures act prior to a fight) to truly show what I think would be a size advantage over Godzilla.
I also think there will be a certain elegance or even regalness to the design, almost that cool villain that looks too pretty to be evil yet is far more wicked than its look belies. I mean it’s a golden dragon compared to the hulking, grizzled Godzilla. Again it’s pure speculation on my part.

I don't even particularly dislike that Mothra design (to be honest I've always felt like I'd like her more if she were more bug-like), but yeah I'm also a bit skeptical that those pics are real. The Rodan maquette is one thing, but those drawings are obviously much easier to fake.

I'm getting used to the idea of Ghidorah having his wings as forelimbs, but I also agree that the necks there look a bit too thick. But as I say I'm not putting too much stock in those pics as being legit.

The curve of the horns on the back of Rodan's neck are different in the sketch and model, though they are otherwise similar... but the vagueness of the sketch also contributes to that.

I'm happy to see him emphasizing Rodan. Of the four kaiju he's the easiest to get lost in the shuffle: Godzilla's the star; Ghidorah is the heavy; Mothra is the benevolent, mystical one; and Rodan is... the other one - or at least he easily could be.

Apparently, "someone who works to make Christmas ornaments" said the rumored Rodan maquette is not far off from what they got.


Take that with a grain of salt about yay big:

A while back, a guy sent me a direct message on another forum about a test screening he attended. I said I didn't want any spoilers but he did say the designs were all pretty much traditional but updated a bit, nothing like Mothra being a fly. So I hope he was right.

However, he said the movie is bad bad bad. A ton of monster action and fighting, maybe the most he ever saw in a film of this kind. But the overall plot/story was razzie worthy.

I'm not putting too much (any?) stock into any early plot leaks. This early test screening (which I kinda honestly wonder about even happening, frankly) was supposedly a rough, SHORT cut of what had been done so far. The effects were pre-vis, and it was prior to re-shoots. Supposing a test screening like this was actually held, it was essentially a 'rough draft' of the movie, and they're not typically trying to 'show off' as much as they are get feedback. What did people specifically like/dislike? And then they tailor the reshoots from there.

Early test screenings of lots of movies have turned out massively different from the final product. I wouldn't trust "some guy" on "some site" who supposedly saw a test screening, saying it was "razzie level" when the other leaks coming from the supposed test screening (jesus, how many people have seen this supposed test screening? it feels like way more than even COULD have) were positive.

It all REEKS of nonsense.
